5 Steps To Calm Your Job Interview Jitters

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

Job interviews make even the most qualified professionals nervous. That's because buried in our unconscious mind are memories of mistakes, errors, failures, unpleasant and painful experiences. Most people have experienced job interview rejection at some point in their career.

And anytime an interview comes up, they dwell on these negative thoughts which produce interview jitters. Of course, they serve no purpose in moving you toward your real goal - which is to excel in your interview and get hired.

Here's Are 5 Steps You Can Take To Eliminate Negative Thoughts

Number one. Identify negative thoughts about the job interview. Trace down the belief about yourself, the interview or about other people. Perhaps you secretly feel unworthy of the job. Or you may believe you do not deserve it. Maybe you feel inferior compared to other candidates.

Perhaps you get shy and timid. Or fear overtakes you when it's time to interview. Or some questions just intimidate you. Or maybe you just feel you are not good at interviews, period.

Number two. Evaluate and examine your beliefs. Ask yourself why you feel this way. Is there a rational reason for this negative belief? Is this consistent with who you really are. Is this really true?

Be aggressive with these ideas. Do not address them casually. Take your time and get to the bottom of the problem. Think hard about them and wrestle with the emotional truths. Start asking yourself if this is "really" truly you. Or some false belief you have held for years. It's time to let these go. Starting now.

Number three. Decide what your "new" thought should be. Picture to yourself what you would like to be and how you want to act in your interview. Can you see that your old ideas are selling yourself short? That they are false beliefs that you are holding you back.

Number four. Replace old thoughts with new positive thoughts. Negative thoughts can be changed but they are not changed by "will", you must replace them with new positive thoughts.

Number five. Focus on the new ideas about yourself and they will take cancel out your old negative thoughts. Dwell on them daily and they will become your new reality. Form a picture in your imagination of the "new you" in the interview and see yourself this way when you close your eyes. When you see something clearly in your mind, you automatically start to work on becoming that person.

Mentally rehearse the "new you" in your interviews. Go over in your mind all the questions you will be asked. Think about the answers the "new you" will give and see you saying it with confidence and clarity. Rehearse this and pretty soon, this will become your new reality.

Job interviews are the place to be confident and sell yourself. Take this exercise seriously and you will likely notice yourself acting differently in your next job interview. So go ahead and kill those interview jitters today!
