Translations for Mobile Apps

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Mobile applications are becoming more and more popular. According to statistics reported in 2011, by Mobile Inquirer, more than 325 million mobile or hand held devices are online in the United States alone. We are actually third in line, with several other countries ahead of us, as well as multiple countries falling closely behind.

Mobile phone and tablet usage online has escalated to the point that more and more companies are implementing the use of mobile websites and offering mobile applications. They are also translating those applications and websites so that they are available to customers from around the globe.

Of the many people purchasing products online, over half use mobile applications to purchase. Most of these applications are downloaded from websites. Good website localization services are necessary in order to provide a solid help file and explanations of what the applications can do, no matter where you are in the world.

Mobile applications and mobile websites have a few things that are unique about them. They also have some requirements which are specific to mobile apps that make translation slightly more difficult to accomplish. For this reason alone, translation of applications will be far more difficult to accomplish.

In many cases, companies today are relying on mobile application translations and website localization services which are done on the fly by machines. Google translation is a machine powered translation software service that is in use today for translating applications. While it is usable and often enough for a mobile application that is designed for something such as, banking for example, having the translation accomplished by a machine is simply not in your best interests. In some cases, the dialect is unique to an area, such as Spanish which may be spoken in Florida or Chinese that is spoken in a different area of the United States as opposed to the country of origin.

This is one example of how a translation for a mobile application might be more difficult and needs to be more precise. A word for word translation will not accurately convey your message. It may even translate to something completely different that how you mean it.

Mobile translation, due to the nature of the type of display they will require, also needs to be briefer in order to be able to fit on the pages. The translation may need to be adjusted so that the areas which explain the application will be briefer and the input areas which house things such as information have more space to include the full responses.

Pre-translation review should be done to ensure that the mobile application is well suited or is adjusted to allow for the process of translation. Some languages are more concise with wording. In other languages the character spacing may be larger therefore taking up more space to relay the same message.

Mobile applications today are becoming a necessity for businesses. More than fifty percent of the United States alone is buying online using a mobile device. The mobile websites and mobile applications which allow them to do so provide for the growth of your company. Ensure that you have an accurate and viable translation for your mobile application.
