Things to Know For Moving Your Goods

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 147

If you have to move your goods from one destination to another, it is foremost for your business to choose the right customs route and transport. Your choice will depend on the following questions:

  1. How timely the delivery of your goods should be?
  2. How much transportation cost you want to incur for the delivery of your goods?
  3. What is the nature of your goods which you want to deliver to the other country?
  4. Do the goods require extra consideration in terms of packing?
  5. Does your country and the other country have a reliable transport infrastructure?

Once you have figured out the above points, you can make a decision based on the following modes of transportation:

Road freight is one of the most common ways to transport goods. It can be an ideal mode if the distance is short. You can deliver perishable goods this way as well. Secondly, you are able to monitor the delivery of goods by communicating with the driver. Its most significant benefit is that it is highly cost-effective. However, you will have to pay additional road charges if there are any regulations.

Companies that have to deliver goods based on short lead times prefer shipping goods by air. Although it is not an economical option, it enables companies to enhance their goodwill. This is because it provides fastest delivery over long distances. Customer retention also increases this way. Moreover, it is the safest mode of transport.

Air freight has some drawbacks just like other modes. Although it provides timely delivery of goods, you can face flight delays or cancellations. But it rarely happens. Secondly, moving by air means that you have limited routes available.

Companies that require shipping a large amount of consignments use sea freight. The main reason behind it is that they have long lead times. Secondly, it is very cost-effective in terms of moving heavy and large volume goods from one country to the other. Some good examples of bulky goods are minerals and coal.

In spite of all its benefits, it can also be a bit costly because you will have to pay port taxes as well. Along with that, the delivery of goods is very slow. Therefore, you can choose this mode only if you have a long lead time.

Rail is the most suitable mode of transport if you have to deliver heavy goods from one city to another. Since it offers domestic delivery of goods, it is safe, cost-effective, and reliable. However, its frequent delays can be time-consuming.
