Potential Problems With Import And Export Of Goods

July 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 255

If you regularly or just occasionally buy and sell things on the Internet as either a hobby like eBay, or as a business then you may occasionally either import or export parcels.

Firstly I would say that for 90% of the time most people will do this and experience no problems at all, but around 10% of the time you may well run in to problems.

The problem is that what may be legal in one country maybe illegal in another, take Stun Guns as an example, they are legal in the USA to buy, but not in the UK. Indeed in the UK you need a special arms licence to import one in and typically these import licences are only issued to police and armed forces, and not private companies. So try importing a Stun Gun and whilst you may be able to buy one on the Internet, you are likely to find yourself arrested on illegal firearms importation charges!

This just shows how failure to observe what you can and cannot import could see you in very hot water with the authorities.

Likewise in Britain sadly there are many "Legal highs" sold online, however many of these are illegal in other countries in Europe and you could find yourself facing drugs charges for exporting them. This is likely to cause the parcel courier you have used major problems as well, and is likely to result in legal action from them.

The two examples I have used above are extreme ones but just go to show how you can seemingly innocently ship an item in a parcel and end up with major problems.

The moral of this story is to choose a parcel courier who can provide you with good advice and help you steer clear of any import or export problems before they occur.

This is because there are a multitude of cultural and religious areas to also be aware of as well, as simply sending a copy of a men's magazine (not necessarily nude pictures) with scantily clad ladies in, could be enough to cause serious offence in Muslim countries whereby a religious/morality officer will be part of the customs team opening parcels.

Many people also fall foul of trying to import or export meat or food products or live plants, which is often a big no-no even between many westernised countries as it is seen as a high risk area of contamination.

So if in any doubt when it comes to what you can and cannot export then check with your parcel courier.

Looking to send a package internationally? Worldwide Parcel Services are a cheap courier who work closely with the major parcel courier companies to be able to provide competitive pricing, regardless of where your package is due to be delivered.
