Document Translation for Foreign Markets - 5 Things to Consider

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 279

When going into business in a foreign country that communicates in another language you will inevitably need to carry out document translation. This process may sound simple, but has the potential to be wrought with trouble if the time is not taken to appreciate the details that go into it.

Where Is Your Translator Based?

The majority of large firms will have a multi-cultural workforce, with employees who speak a variety of languages. The temptation could then be to have translations carried out in house, or if not within the firm then through a locally based third party translator. If at all possible you may wish to consider having your documents translated by someone who is currently located in the foreign territory you wish to expand into. This will ensure that the translation is as fresh and up to date as possible, incorporating all the modern nuances of the language.

Is Your Translation in the Context of Your Industry?

This is especially relevant if your documents involve a degree of technical or product specific terminology. It is no use having a literal translation that doesn't account for the subtleties of your firm's message. What you ideally want is for your translator to be well versed in the subject matter they are dealing with. Finding a translator who is both technically proficient and lives within the nominated foreign territory is no easy task, but there are translation organisations out there which can assist you with this.

Will Your Document Layout need to be Re-designed?

Document translation is not a clean 'like for like' process. When working with different characters, grammar rules, phrasing, and other linguistic functions there are always differences in how one language is presented versus another. For example, a document in English will be a totally different length in Japanese, and the document design will have to be tweaked to present this new translation in the best possible light.

Does Your Website also need to be Re-designed as a Result?

In an increasingly digital world, document translation also has to be viewed in an online sense. Translating your website content into a foreign language can cause the design to become less effective as a means of promoting your brand, or potentially impact on functionality. Remain aware that certain words and phrases will appear longer when translated, so be prepared to alter the design of menu buttons which may no longer make sense in their current form.

Talk to Your Translator!

Truly effective document translation is not a one step process; it involves a dialogue between client and translator. Let your translator know the sort of tone you wish your translation to be in, along with any other specific requirements you may have. This will help them get everything to your liking the first time, saving everyone the hassle of a re-write.
