Chinese Business Relations: A Lesson in Etiquette

For the Chinese this means extending them extra consideration and courtesy. They have much stricter rules when it comes to business formalities than most western cultures and with China quickly growing to be one of the largest importers in the world, you'll want to keep them on your good side and make sure to show proper respect and most important of all, take the time to learn about, and show appreciation for their culture.

It's All In the Name

When meeting for the first time it is important to address Chinese individuals using their family names and nothing more. Avoid first names and make sure to put the first name second when you become comfortable enough to use it. For business purposes it is acceptable to address people by their surname and their professional title as well but don't overdo it. Becoming too casual too quickly can lead to them being taken aback. This is one of the most important Chinese business etiquette tips to keep in mind when doing business in China.

Patience and Timing

When it comes to formal business meetings it is all about patience and timing. Important guests will be escorted to their seats and then seated before the meeting begins. Everyone should be seated before the meeting begins. Once the meeting starts business cards are typically exchanged much like in the West except in China it is a far more formal practice. When offering your card you hold it with two hands out. You can only exchange one card for one, don't just pass them out. Hand the card directly to the recipient and when you receive their card, look at it meaningfully and then set it on the table face up until the meeting adjourned. When the meeting is completed you will place the card in a holder specifically for business cards, or carefully in your wallet. Don't fold the business cards up or damage them as this is an easy way to lose current or future Chinese store partners.

Paying heed to these Chinese business etiquette tips is essential if you want to make the most of any business relationship or even personal interactions with the Chinese. It is important not to offend anyone and if you are successful the relationships you forge can lead to you're becoming Chinese store partners and increased profitability of your business.
