Understanding Different Caster Types

June 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 276

Wheels casters are a great addition to any type of furniture because of the extra utility they can provide. Unfortunately it can be difficult to decide on the right type of caster for what the furniture is used for when one goes into the purchase knowing nothing. Understanding the different types will provide enough information to make an educated buying decision that works best.

Single wheel casters are great to use on lighter furniture because they are easy on the floors and furniture alike. They are usually made of a rubberized material to provide the softness and tactile response necessary to keep light furniture in place. Unfortunately with the easy way they treat the floors, these casters are only meant for light furniture without a lot of stuff on it. Placing too much weight on these tables is dangerous because of both the possibility of one breaking and because they can be tipped over much more easily. There are also low profile caster wheels meant to stay in one place for longer times that will actually help this problem, if someone thinks there may be an issue.

Ball casters are also great for home furniture since they allow unlimited movement in any direction at any time. Regular casters are on a wheel that must be in a certain direction to move, but ball casters are designed to prevent any issues with small movement. Sometimes with normal casters a movement in certain directions will spin the furniture in an awkward way and possibly knock objects off of it. The only problem is that the movement of ball casters may work at a disadvantage since any fluctuation in the height or certain floor types will allow furniture to move around easily. It can be irritating to be sitting on a couch that moves every time someone sits down or gets up.

The last type of caster is the dual wheel caster. These are created for furniture that is much heavier than regular home furniture. They distribute the weight across two disks and disperse it evenly for the hinges to allow everything to sit still and hold a lot. The problem with these types of decorative caster wheels is they are usually created for professional environments and will often be created out of a material that can easily damage home flooring. Paying attention to this is crucial to ensure that the flooring is not torn up within a year of installation. However, there are some created specifically to be a gentler alternative, but it is good to make sure it can be returned if it does not serve the right purpose.
