Hope's Healing Power

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 143

I will never forget in college when a fellow student had experienced a severe aneurysm that had destroyed 80% of her brain. The doctors gave her no hope of making it through the operation or of recovery if she did survive. As a few students prayed together through the night we each experienced for the first time something unique and powerful. We heard the Lord speak to us in our spirit and tell us that He had heard our prayers and that she would be healed. When I began to share with a friend what had happened and about the miracle we knew God was going to do, she rebuked me and said that it was cruel to get people's hopes up. That silenced me but I was dumbfounded. What was cruel about getting people's hopes up? Since that time I have heard similar logic used many times. What does the bible have to say about hope?

Romans 4:17 (as it is written, "I have made you a father of many nations") in the presence of Him whom he believed--God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; 18 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be." 19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb.

Abraham had a promise from God and in Romans 4:18 we read that contrary to hope in hope Abraham believed. Hope and faith are equated here the word faith is used to describe the same confidence in the Lord. In Hebrews 11:1 we learn that faith is the assurance, being sure, or substance of what we hope for, and being sure of what we cannot see. Hope is the foundational building block of faith.

The Hebrew and Greek words are many and varied that are used for hope. When you look at them and their meanings it is very interesting. Hope is the same word as wait. Hope isn't what you are going through it is what you are expecting. Hope is nearly always used in a positive sense of expecting a positive outcome. One time in scripture the word is used of expecting a negative outcome. Expectation is the other significant meaning to the word. The anchor of hope throughout scripture is God, His Word and His character.

There are many promised related to hope. One famous passage is Isaiah 40:31, "They that wait upon or Hope in the Lord, shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint." Doesn't knowing the word for wait upon the Lord is actually Hope in the Lord give that passage a richness of meaning? Jesus would often say to people who came to him for a miracle, "be it unto you according to your faith." In other words, Jesus was saying, you will get what you are expecting, believing for.

Do you need a miracle? Do you need a healing? If you expect that God isn't going to do anything for you, then you are probably right. Does God want to do a miracle for you? He does. He wants to heal you. Don't be afraid to hope in the Lord. Don't be afraid to hope and have faith that no matter what you face today, God is still on His throne. He loves you. He knows your name, where you live, what you need, how many hairs are on your head. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Without hope it is impossible to have faith. If your hope and faith are waning today, pray the prayer that one father prayed when asked if he believed Jesus could do a miracle for his son, "Lord, I believe, help my unbelief."
