Gratitude in the Little Things

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 126

"Who does not thank for little will not thank for much." ~ Estonian Proverb

How often throughout the day is your mind filled with worry, doubt, frustration, resentment, and complaints? What about at night when it's time to rest, do you count your problems instead of sheep? If so, try counting your blessings instead~ not just the big ones, but the little blessings, too.

All too often, we use every last bit of our mental energy toward worrying about our problems or what we don't have instead of focusing on what we do have. It's no wonder we feel drained half of the time! Even a plant needs sunshine in order to grow! When we focus on what we don't have, that negative energy will persist and by being grateful for even the smallest things, gratitude will transform our perceptions.

So, if you're looking for a reprieve... relax your mind. Start a gratitude journal (if you haven't already!). And, if the journal you do have is covered in dust, it's time to brush it off! Learn how to appreciate the blessings in your life by putting them on paper. Visualize your gratitude. By applying a little optimism to your life you will surely be put on your path to having more gratitude in your attitude!

Life isn't all about complaining, and it isn't all about work, traffic, bills, or not having "enough." Think about it, has the complaining worked for you? Are you accomplishing more in your life or is it wearing you down? It's time to take the "tilt" sign off of your forehead and add some balance to your life.

There's a commercial on TV where two women are talking in the grocery store and one lady says to the other, "So, how far along are you?" The other woman glares at her and says, "What did you just say?!" (The first lady realizing she stuck her foot in her mouth and now not knowing what to say back), she says, "Um, Thank You?" The woman points at herself, "Me?" The other lady says, "Yes." All of a sudden everything's okay and they're laughing and talking! It's really amazing what a simple "Thank You" or show of appreciation will do, versus giving nothing back or complaining. Showing gratitude is not only needed by others, it's needed for our own spirit. How often have you felt the need to be appreciated by others? It works both ways. The more you give, the more you'll receive. "What comes around goes around."

It's really not that difficult to apply more gratitude to your life. It's about the little things- the things that make you happy, the things that you take for granted, and the people who make you smile. You've heard the phrase, "Life used to be so simple." It still is... you just have to open your eyes. And, the difference between an optimist and a pessimist, is that the optimist simply has gratitude.

Instead of letting your mind race a hundred miles an hour tonight (while you're laying in bed), try writing down five things you feel grateful for before you go to sleep. Try it for a week or more and see if this doesn't begin to change your thought patterns. Work on having an attitude of gratitude. Take your energy and apply it towards the little things and watch your life transform.

"Nothing will content him who is not content with a little." ~ Greek Proverb
