The No 1 Bed Bug Myth Debunked

December 19, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

There is quite a bit of incorrect information circulating on the Web regarding the extermination of bed bugs. People claiming to be experts are preying on your misery and infiltrating your minds with myths that are absolutely FALSE. And, that's exactly why we are about to make real waves by debunking one of the major myths put forward by exterminators. And we suspect some are furniture sellers countrywide.

Bed Bug Myth:

You have to throw away your bed and all your furniture if you have an infestation

Bed Bug Fact:

No, you don't have to throw away your stuff - for one thing, mattresses are costly, and you don't necessarily need to chuck it out just because you have discovered a bed bug invasion. A mattress encasement is an easy option to help keep you from spending more money. This encasement is in essence just a plastic, bug-proof cover for your mattress that you zip around the outside.

If you already have bed bugs, it traps them inside the mattress, and it keeps new ones from getting in. Ultimately they will die out, although they can remain in your mattress for up to six months. They won't be troubling you in the interim. It's an easy solution - tests on mattress covers have shown that it is very hard for bed bugs to get through them - and it will save you lots of money.

Divest yourself of as many of the bugs as possible by vacuuming the mattress meticulously before sticking on a cover. The bugs can still live in other places around your house, and you'll still have the problem. However, it will get rid of their favorite hiding spot and protect your wallet.

What About My Other Stuff, Do I Need to Throw Them Out?

This is an extremely hard question to answer. Exterminators will almost certainly tell you a bunch of different things. In addition, a lot of government agencies advocate that you just trash everything if you can afford to. Others will advise trying to save as much as possible.

The truth is, if you don't throw stuff away, there is a danger that you will have a repetition of the problem because a bed bug will have concealed itself in a nightstand, a couch, or some other random part of your house.

However, it is probably cheaper to just take the risk and keep your furniture. A lot of exterminators are willing to try to treat all of your furniture. This depends heavily on many issues such as the type of furniture you have, and whether you're in a single-family residence or an apartment, and still it may not work.

Kill Bed Bug First

What do you have to lose? Your furniture most likely would cost you thousands of dollars to replace. It would cost only a few hundred to bring the exterminator back. It might not work, and you could get bed bugs back in your house again. But we think that a risk worth taking.

A lot of people have thrown away loads of their stuff and bought a bunch of new furniture, only to be re-infested anyway, either because they missed something or because the bugs were coming in from the walls of another apartment, or the treatment was deficient.
