Spring Is in the Air - So Are the Bees

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Spring Time

It's the time of year where everything is fresh and new. The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and the bees...Well they are swarming, looking to take up residence. It just maybe at your house.

What to do if you encounter a swarm of bees?

Keep your distance and do not disturb them. Swarming bees are pretty docile unless disturbed. The bees main focus in a swarm is to protect the Queen bee. If the bees are in a tree, they should leave within 24-72 hours. We must remember, the bee is one of the most beneficial insect that we have. It has often been said that bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat. They pollinate crops, trees, flowers etc. Let's not forget about the delicious treat they produce for us. Honey is a sweet food made by bees using nectar from flowers. Honey bees transform nectar into honey by a process of regurgitation, and store it as a primary food source in wax honeycombs inside the beehive.

What to do if you are attacked?

Bees are attracted to movement. The worst thing you can do is swat at them. This will only attract more bees to your attention. Bees also communicate by pheromones. Once you have been stung, other bees will be attracted to you by the pheromone left behind. The best thing to do is get indoors or in a car. A few bees may make it inside, but they can only sting you once. What ever you do, do not jump in a pool. they will wait for you to come up for air.

Okay, they have decided to take up residence. What now?

Act fast! Bees will get more protective and aggressive the longer they establish themselves. That's when things can get dangerous. They are more easily provoked now. A bark of a dog or the sound of a lawnmower could set them into a stinging frenzy. I would never recommend anyone trying to treat them on their own. Get a professional. The longer you wait, the more likely you will have to hire a contractor to repair the wall after the pest control professional has had to open it up to remove the hive possibly quadrupling the cost.

Remember, bees are a beneficial part of our ecosystem, only exterminate them if there is no other alternative. For more information on other pest visit our website at
