Why Green Energy Is Indispensable

June 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 185

What is green energy? In simple terms, it is energy that is generated without using materials that are unsustainable, does not cause environmental destruction and meets the needs of the present without, in any way, jeopardizing the ability to meet the needs of the future.

Most countries in the world today are seriously looking at renewable sources of energy as they understand that their total dependence on fossil fuels could lead them to a catastrophic end. It is clear that fossil fuels are not everlasting and the more we depend on it, the more we deplete it till there is no more left. Besides, the unbridled use of these is very environment-unfriendly.

As the awareness among nations to protect the environment becomes stronger, the emphasis on green technology becomes greater. Environmental degradation and global warming have been talked about like never before. Nations have legislated on these issues and efforts are on for a global consensus on measures to contain the damage.

The stated objective of United Nations' Framework Convention on Climate Change is "stabilization of greenhouse gases concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system" and this has exercised the international community to arrive at some consensus to legislate its control.

The Kyoto protocol, an international environmental treaty, signed on December 11, 1997, under this convention was one such effort to fight global warming. The protocol aims at reducing four greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and sulphur hexafluoride) and two groups of gases, hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons, produced by them.

The Montreal Protocol of 1987 on 'Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer', under the Vienna Convention might have been the precursor on environmental protection. It was an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer phasing out the production of industrial gases, chlorofluorocarbons and other substances that were believed to be the causes for ozone depletion. Emissions by shipping and international aviation also came under its ambit.

The seriousness of the problem, besides throwing up new business opportunities, has accelerated research into finding ways to reduce dependence on energy generated by fossil fuels. Coal and oil-fired energy generation are becoming more and more expensive and as the supply of these raw materials start to dwindle, the viability of sustained production becomes difficult. One has to look at alternate sources of energy. Besides, the extraction and use of the fossil fuels like coal and oil have been leading to many toxic byproducts as well as environmental pollution.

Solar power, wind energy, biofuels are some of the green energy sources that are slowly gaining acceptance as viable alternatives. Much research is on in these areas, to develop technology to generate energy that is economically viable and easy to produce. One inspiring factor with solar and wind is that these resources are unlimited.
