How to Negotiate Better Pricing at the Scrap Yard

June 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

As anyone who scraps on a regular basis knows, the better the scrap price you can get for your metals - the more money that finds its way into your pocket. The scrap markets dictate published scrap metal prices, but with a bit of work - and a little luck - you can possibly negotiate with your local yard to receive higher than advertised prices.

First and foremost, to understand how to negotiate a higher price, you first need to get an understanding of the scrap yard's business, and what all goes into their expenses. The highest cost for any scrap yard's operation is payroll and employee's wages. Therefore, the more time the handling of your transaction takes, the less likely the yard is going to be to pay you more than their advertised price. These published prices have all of the operating expenses built into them, so any sort of savings you can provide for the yard from an operational standpoint - the better an argument you have for negotiating a better price. For example, if you have all of your different grades of scrap properly sorted and separated in various containers, the less time the yard's employees have to spend organizing them for you.

Another great way to make an argument for receiving higher scrap metal prices at your local yard is to refrain from making multiple trips to the yard in a single day. A lot of my regular customers come to our yard 3-4 times per day as they collect scrap, and find themselves in the area. These customers will typically have a wide assortment of different grades of scrap in lesser quantities. What I suggest to them, is to hold off and collect larger quantities of individual grades of scrap and then turn around to negotiate a bit of a higher price for their collection of scrap metals. If you arrive at your local yard with the 3-4 small trips worth of metal collected in one big visit to the yard, you're therefore taking up only a quarter of each of the employee's time to handle your business. You are also arriving with a larger quantity on top of it. These two points are other great topics to bring up when attempting to negotiate a higher scrap metal price.

At the end of the day, there is a whole lot going on behind the scenes of your local scrap yard that you most likely are not even aware of. Things like rising expenses, equipment repairs, growing pains of the business - all sorts of things which could be hurting their business and causing them to keep a tighter grip on profit margins. Regardless of how you go about attempting to negotiate a higher scrap metal price, you very well might still not receive higher than their board price. However, building and maintaining a relationship with those working at your local yard is always the #1 way to always make sure you get the best price possible. People are always most likely to help out nice, friendly people they've grown accustomed to over an aggressive, stand-offish person who creates a problem. Remember, we're all here at the yard working to make a living same as everyone else!
