Google X Needs a Duplication Strategy for Innovation

June 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 150

The other day, I was looking at the research and development being done by the Google X Team which is essentially using the same theories and modeling behind the Xerox Parc project, Bell Labs, and other highly innovative applied science teams and think tanks. But what if we could up the ante, and take it to a whole new level? What if we could systematize the actual research into a project management format which would essentially operate in a Six Sigma Way? And then what if we could duplicate groups and teams like this throughout the country?

Well, since I have your attention now, let's go ahead and discuss this for a moment because I just happened to be a former franchisor founder. In fact, in our company we did something somewhat similar, where we allowed our franchisee teams to innovate and bring new concepts to market in the cleaning industry, and then we would duplicate those and add those new services to all of our other existing franchisees. That worked pretty well.

Still, by doing this we were turning our franchisee business units into miniature R&D labs for the service industry. If Google X is working in Silicon Valley, and if it is working well and providing that company with new innovative ideas, some of which they probably go for, while others they end up scrapping, as it is much like DARPA high risk high reward, then why aren't they building Google X labs in every state? They have the money, so there would be no reason that they are not doing this now, unless perhaps everyone there is so busy creating new innovations that no one stopped to think about this concept.

Indeed, I would submit to you that anyone who has ever been involved in a project like this is quite busy, and so into it that it may not cross their mind, but after they are completed, and step back, they think to themselves wow, look at all those great things we did in such a short amount of time. It's at that point that this concept hits you, and you begin to understand the duplication process which is involved in franchising, but is also involved in the natural order of human imitation, as has been genetically and anthropologically the way of things.

Maybe Google X should do what works, and duplicate what they are doing, and turn up the volume. Of course, this is just a thought, and they come so rapidly, I hardly have time to write them all down. Nevertheless, I'm hoping someone reads this and thinks about it.
