By the Power of the Wind

June 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

The wind as a source of energy is not a new thinking. It has been used for thousands of years in windmills and the sails of ships. Windmills in the Netherlands were used for pumping water to drain polders to form agricultural land. They were also used for grinding grain.

In the race to find alternate sources of energy, that is clean, sustainable and renewable, wind power has caught the attention of scientists, industrialists and governments. Green technology has designed large, modern wind turbines that can generate electricity. Many governments offer subsidy to its citizens, should they decide to set up windmills to generate power, for their own use and contribute the balance to the power grid.

How do you generate power by using the wind? Windmills and wind turbines are generally installed in places that experience strong winds. The wind turbines are like giant fans. They, generally, have a couple or more blades that are turned by the wind force. The turbine blades are designed to capture kinetic energy in the wind. The kinetic energy in the moving turbine blades turns a rotor connected to the main shaft. The main shaft then spins inside copper wire loops, wound over an iron core in the generator to create electricity. Wind turbines are mounted on tall towers, generally 100 feet. At this height the wind speed is less turbulent and faster.

While wind power generates clean energy, there has been some adverse impact on the environment. Notably, there have been some wildlife deaths with birds being the most vulnerable. Noise pollution is another irritant. This is more in places that are very close to the windmills. But considering the impacts that power generation from fossil fuels has on the environment, this is negligible and also fairly controllable. However, choosing the proper location of the windmills is crucial for better and safer power generation.

Several countries of the world have been actively promoting the installation of windmills, both by individuals and corporates, to augment power generation. The foremost among these is the United States of America. Other countries like Germany, China, Spain, Holland and India, among others, have also realized the potential of wind energy and have established authorities to study and install capacities for power generation. The wind generated power production is increasing as a result. With improved wind turbine technology, many countries have realized higher levels of energy output using wind power.

As with any alternate solutions and technology, wind energy also meets with opposition from powerful fossil fuel lobbies. Despite this, governments in many countries have given a push to the development of this clean and sustainable energy, often under pressure from strong environmental activist groups like Greenpeace, who involve citizen groups in their fight to prevent environmental degradation.ends
