A Comprehensive Welding Tool: Plasma Cutters

January 31, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 204

Welding as such is an art which requires tremendous amount of artistic abilities and precision. Theoretically speaking, it is nothing but the process of joining two or more metal pieces together with the help of a molten solution that solidifies upon cooling to form the bond between them. That's all there is to it and thus anyone could literally learn about welding with much ease. However, in order to become a true master welder, you need tremendous amount of practice, exposure and experience to create proper welds. Proper welds are highly essential as without it the quality of the products manufactured is severely dampened. Most of the heavy manufacturing industries heavily rely upon good quality welders to create sturdy products that are quite robust as well.

Plasma Cutters are one among the comprehensive and essential tools of welding accessories. It facilitates cutting of metal pieces. Plasma cutting is certainly a fascinating and progressive technology ever to be invented.

The working mechanism:

Plasma cutters work on the basis of arc creation and there are several different kinds of plasma cutters to create that arc which is essential for facilitating the cutting procedure. Some cutters create this arc when its torch comes in contact with the metal while some cutters make use of high voltage or high frequency to start the arc. In these cutters, the electric discharge is sent through the shielding gas which is essentially argon or nitrogen which then passes through a small opening. At its core there is a negatively charged electrode and when electricity is introduced to this electrode and its tip is brought in contact with the metal that needs to be cut, a circuit is created which leads to the spark. This spark heats the gas which converts it into a plasma state. And this plasma cuts through the metal smoothly and flexibly while moving at a very high speed. Nowadays, plasma cutters are not manual anymore has technology has severely influenced them. You have CNC plasma cutters that are driven by specialized software that controls and monitors the cutting procedure. All a welder ever needs to do is set the initial parameters required by the software and monitor the process of plasma cutting which makes his/her job all the more easier.

Setting Up Plasma Cutters:

i) Connect the air line jogging from the compressor to the air regulator which is located at the back of the plasma cutter. ii) Switch on the compressor and allow it to build pressure. iii) Place a piece of scrap metal on the non combustible work surface. iv) Always have a fire extinguisher nearer to you for safety reasons. v) Secure the plasma cutting lead to the scrap metal. vi) Switch the cutter on and set up its heat to the highest possible setting. vii) Grasp the plasma cutter firmly and pull it over the work surface. If you are able to notice dross cooled melted metal hanging from the cut, reduce the heat setting of the plasma cutter to appropriate levels.

There are several websites online sharing details, giving tips and guidelines, and merchandising welding tools/equipments and accessories. Before you take up any procedure as a fresher in welding, see to that you follow these tips and guidelines. Also make sure to gather information from validated websites. You don't want wrong piece of information.
