Temporary Work Permits Open the Door for Canadian Immigration

February 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

A temporary work permit is one way for people to decide if they would like to become a Canadian citizen. A temporary work permit allows you to live in Canada and work there for a specific length of time; you are able to renew your work permit. This can be helpful in many ways if you later decide that you would like to apply for citizenship.

It shows that you have employment. This is important, as part of the permanent resident process you have to show that you can support yourself and/or your family.

It shows that you can live and work within the Community. For citizenship in Canada you will have to prove that you can communicate with other residents of the community where you live. Canada requires that all people immigrating be able to speak either English or French.

Most temporary work permits are given to people with training in skilled labor of some kind. This proves that you have either completed a post secondary education or have the equivalent work experience.

In most cases it is easier to apply for citizenship in Canada if you are already living and working there under a temporary work permit. However, keep in mind that you have to continue to work throughout the application process which can take up to 18 months to complete. There are four main routes you can take when applying from within Canada on a temporary workers permit.

You could apply under the Federal Skilled Workers program with pre-arranged employment. There are two steps to this plan when applying from within Canada.1.) Your employer would have to offer you employment for an indefinite length of time. This is the arranged employment portion of it.2.) You would have to meet the Federal Skilled Workers points system. This is generally not a problem if you are an educated, skilled worker already living in Canada then you probably qualify for the points needed to pass.

Another route to citizenship you may want to consider is the Canadian Experience Class. This is an option for those people who are unable to meet the point requirement for the Federal Skilled Workers program. This program requires that you either work in Canada for 2 years at a skilled position, or you complete post-secondary studies and work for 1 year in Canada. If you qualify under this program you will have to complete one of the requirements before applying.

The Provincial Nominee Program and the Quebec Experience Class are two other routes you could explore if you do not qualify for either of the other options. Remember that there is no best or worst, no right or wrong, way to apply. Canada offers several options so that each person interested can find the option that best suits them.
