How Is DC Injection Braking Used With Electric Motors?

DC injection braking is a halting system used with AC drives and works by the sudden input of a direct current into an alternating current system, which causes the machine to slow down and stop. This braking system is used to provide a safe and soft stop for a huge number of different machines and vehicles such as rock crushers, centrifuges, chippers, conveyor systems, fans, band saws, circular saws, shredders and grinders.

The DC injection method is known to provide smooth and controlled braking for AC electric motors, a specification that is vital for the safety and reliability for industrial machines. The rapidity of this braking operation is also valued for increasing production rates and maintaining a high level of workplace safety. The injection strategy also allows users to adjust the braking rate to a specific purpose or need, made possible by a closed loop current control.

Injection braking is most commonly used on three-phase AC windings. It operates by injecting a direct current volt into the circuit while the rotor is still in motion to produce a pulsating torque motion. This brings the entire circuit to a stand still. This is a convenient and efficient method of braking for many circuit systems, however in variable speed drives many people prefer to build a power transistor circuit to form a dynamic braking system.

Another popular braking method used with AC drives is 'Plugging' which means reversing the power supplied to the electric motor. This operation may not be as smooth or controlled as the process of DC injection into any two terminals of the AC drive, however. A smooth braking method is preferred in most cases because it causes less stress and friction to the system, meaning that the entire drive is made more durable and resistant to damage.

When choosing injection braking systems it is important to look for models that are fully compliant with all the relevant safety standards to make sure that your machinery poses no safety risk while braking or operating normally. DC injection electric motor systems often feature an integrated starting system which offers similar safety and functional benefits when overcoming inertia to get the system into operation. Injection powered systems, for both starting and stopping, are capable of manipulating systems running at high speeds and with heavy loads easily and reliably, making this braking and starting method key to the success of many industrial systems.
