DIY Electric Car - The Best Way to Go

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 91

Electric vehicles have been around for a very long time but the public has never fully embraced them because purchasing one was quite expensive. Add to that, batteries then were not so efficient in storing power, making the electric cars nothing more but expensive adult toys. Now that there are huge leaps and advances in technology and some problems plaguing the electric car have been addressed, more and more people are once again getting interested in purchasing or owning an ev. Add to that the rising cost of fuel these days, the appeal of having an electric vehicle doubles.

But electric cars are generally more expensive than gasoline powered cars. The primary reason is the cost of the batteries used. But seeing the savings in fuel costs would more than pay up for the up-front cost of owning an electric vehicle though.

If you are one of those do-it-yourself hobbyists then you are in luck. How to build an electric car will not require you to put on another mortgage on your home just so you can save on fuel prices. You can now do a lot of things to convert your old car into an electric vehicle and enjoy the savings. Home built electric cars are easy projects you can do.

The first thing you need to have is a car. Choose a small, lightweight vehicle for this project as heavier cars will consume more energy. You need to save on your battery power.

Make sure that the car you have is also in good condition. Remember, you are converting a fuel car into an electric vehicle. You are NOT restoring it. So be careful with the costs.

Remove the parts that are related to the gasoline internal combustion system. That will include the radiator, coolant tank, fuel lines and filter, engine, starter, radiator, gas tank, exhaust, muffler, cat, and anything else you can think of.

Removing the extras will also save the weight and cleans up the car. It will make wiring so much easier. Do remove the parts carefully. You can sell them and make extra money to add to your electric car project. Make sure also that the safety gears are not altered. You would want to drive a road-safe car for you and your loved ones.

Keep the car's transmission as we could use it to connect power from the electric motor to the car's wheels. Make an "adapter plate" out of a chunk of plate aluminum which has holes in it to line up with both the transmission and the end of the motor. It is best to work with a machinist with this part as they will know more about cars than you do so they can cut the right shape and size to fit your car. The center of the motor drive shaft and the center of the transmission driven shaft need perfect line up. Design a coupler that will mechanically connect both drive shafts before bolting the motor and transmission together with the adapter plate.

Pay attention to the coupler. It is a means of connecting the rotary power of the electric motor to the transmission to power the car. There are a number of ways to do this. Choose which one would work well for your car.

For the transmission line up the motor and transmission, with the coupler halves between them and bolt both the adapter plate.

Congratulations! You now have an electric car.
