The similarities and difference of these two collectors items are intriguing. Some amazing history this world has! Enjoy and learn about beautiful hand crafted weapons. Enjoy!

The Samurai Sword Characteristics

The samurai sword changed very little with the times, they were created long and sharp for cutting during open combat and the short blade was designed primarily for thrusting maneuvers. The Samurai warrior would usually carry two swords during battle. They carried a long one and a short one; each samurai sword was used for different fighting styles depending on the range of the enemy.

The samurai sword was hand made for an individual samurai, shogun, or feudal lord. No two samurai swords were the same because the samurai sword was not just a weapon to the Japanese; they were a symbol of a man's honor, pride, and ego. The samurai sword was protected by a sheath that would be decorated with beautiful designs and jewels, also signifying the family's wealthy status. Each and every one as unique as the man that held it.

The Medieval Sword Characteristics

As the years progressed the medieval sword changed with the times and locations, going from a double edge blade to a single edge blade, for both cutting and thrusting. The most commonly known medieval sword was the heroic knightly sword. It had a cruciform hilt and a straight double edged blade. This medieval sword was used in one hand; therefore, it was a light, versatile weapon capable of both cutting and thrusting so the knight could keep their left hand free for their shield or grappling with their opponents.

The English used a different style sword all together. Their medieval sword was crafted for dueling and was long and thin, but very sharp. Civilians would wear these weapons around just in case they needed them. The basket-hilt sword had a beautiful crafted hand guard to protect their dueling hand, while their other arm stayed back and kept their balance. This medieval sword as very light, but durable.

How They Are Similar

The samurai sword and medieval sword may have been used by different cultures, at different times, but they both were valuable to the warriors who used them. Each sword was crafted for the times and uses of the warriors who held them. They are both very great collectables that are cherished by historians and true defenders of history. As collectors we get to see the beauty, craftsmanship and the battle scars.
