Brushing Up on the Pheasant Habitat

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

There are many different places where the pheasant likes to frequent and learning these is of major importance to the hunter. Some are obvious other not quite so, but each will have dense cover and will require logical and rational thinking to seek out. The birds are adept at lying low and it needs patience to flush them out into the open. They move between fields especially if they are aware of a hunter or hunters presence. They are quite clever really and very quickly cotton on to the fact that they are in imminent danger so it is a case of gaining the upper hand.

When it comes to pheasant hunting tips the most glaringly obvious is to know your target areas. Amongst the favourite places for the birds to use include wetland fringes which offer them excellent roosting and nesting expanses. There is always likely to be very long grass growing in these locations as the ground is normally far too wet to plough. Drainage and roadside ditches provide great roosting spots especially along the slopes which are out of the wind. Many of these ditches will have standing water which encourage heavy growth of grassy cover.

Stream corridors will always have low-lying ground adjacent to them so it would be highly unlikely that they would be ploughed as no crops could thrive, therefore these spots make ideal year-round cover for the birds. Pheasant hunting tips can take on many forms but the most obvious has to be knowing the places to look and abandoned rail tracks and farmsteads are two of the best for locating an established habitat. Dense brush develops which acts as quality cover from predators, so searching out these areas can be very fruitful for the hunter.

Other popular locations include brushy fence lines, shelterbelts, and grassy fringes. One of the more common pheasant hunting tips is to use the weather to your advantage. A long spell of cold weather will very often see the creatures sit tight in dense cover, sometimes for days at a time. Conversely if the weather has been a little warmer and has resulted in a heavy dew the birds will try to keep out of the grass for as long as they can, preferring to scratch around for food and opening themselves up to the hunter.

Snow will be the one condition that changes all tactics completely. The pheasants will move out of grassy areas and move into places that offer them secure overhead protection such as woodlands and heavy brush. The pheasants become more concentrated due to less cover opportunities and consequently easier to find. They tend to congregate in areas where they can find food which is in less supply. Tracks in the snow also help and one of the more skilful of pheasant hunting tips is to look for the drag mark of the rooster's tail in the snow, not obvious but to a trained eye a real clever ploy. It is also a good idea to hunt in pairs in the snow as the bird is spooked already so approaching from opposite directions can bring success to at least one of you.

The sport of pheasant hunting is comprehensively covered at where you will find amongst other things a fascinating section on pheasant hunting tips.
