Appreciation of the Pheasant Brings Results

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 175

For the hunter one of the first things to grasp about the pheasant is the capacity to tell the male and females apart. The males or roosters have a copper coloured breast, lighter at the sides and on the back, with a blue rump patch and a white ring around the neck. Its head is green and black with a redness around the eyes. The tail ranges between 18 and 26 inches in length. The females or hens are a lot duller in appearance with a brown and cream mottling from the head to the tail which is much shorter than that of the male. The colouring helps to camouflage against potential predators.

Success in pheasant hunting greatly improves once the bird's daily movements are fully understood. Certain times of the day will see heavier gatherings compared to others meaning that cover that is full of pheasants in the mornings and again in the evenings will be practically deserted during the day. They are very much a creature of habit and their usual routines take place in a very short space, probably no more than half a mile in diameter.

Proper preparation is imperative if taking pheasant hunting seriously. Some scouting missions shortly before the hunting season opens will more often than not prove to be a very sensible and ultimately advantageous move. Tracking the birds behaviour by driving past favourite roadside spots will give you a head start and save time further down the line. Clothing also should be considered and a key item is the blaze-orange hunting jacket and cap which are the accepted norm amongst all hunters especially when out in tall cover. Boots too are essential for long walks and must be comfortable, therefore it is advisable to wear them in for a week or two prior to partaking in a hunt.

Shot selection becomes vital particularly as the season progresses. This is due to the pheasant becoming more educated as to the hunters intentions and making themselves more scarce. A rushed shot is inevitably a missed shot so just taking that little extra care can make all the difference. In Pheasant hunting the height and density of cover is all important so searching out those areas of tall grassy cover should bring promising results. The birds generally favour these types of surroundings for nesting and roosting as they tend not to be mowed in the nesting season, unlike the hay fields. The most populated fields will be the ones located close to crops with plenty of food supply and good cover.

If pheasant hunting with a dog by your side then target tall grassy areas starting downwind and allow the dog to trace a scent, it might take one or two wrong turns initially as it works out a trail but eventually they will flush the birds out. Working the edges adjacent to crop fields is a tried and tested method with some of the best results. Listening all the time it is possible to hear the pheasants moving in the grass, but the process needs to be taken at a slow pace because at the slightest hint of company and the birds will be off.

Pheasant hunting is one of the more popular game sports and a browse on will introduce you to all you need to know. Facts, techniques and equipment required are all covered in an exceptionally thorough manner.
