How Can We As Americans Help in Poor Latin American Countries Like Honduras?

February 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 223

So often Americans complain and duly forget how darn lucky we are to live in the greatest nation ever created. It's not like this everywhere around the world, and certainly not everywhere in this hemisphere, for instance Bolivia, Haiti, and Honduras to just name a few. Way back in 2006 I wrote a report which I posted online. I wrote the report on how volunteers and humanitarians might give service and help the rural poor in Honduras.

In my research report I had interviewed Dr. Nathalie Fiset, a Rotarian as she had made several medical missions to Latin American Countries, including Honduras. I also interviewed many others who have given of themselves at their own personal expense to make this world a better place. It's amazing and humbling, indeed, more folks should do these things to help people throughout the world.

Indeed, over the years, I've also collected lists of others who've helped throughout the globe and again, using their own money or pooling resources with other humanitarian groups. I believe that trade, tourism, and cultural exchange can do a lot to help as well, one gentleman I met out of Houston who was going to set up a resort, and hire 1000s of Hondurans, which would bring in tourists and dollars to the country, he had approval and was about to make this a reality, this was back when our economy was running redline before the 2008 economic crash.

If you think hard economic times only hurt the US you'd be wrong on that, it's the poorer countries that suffer worse as the inflow of aid, assistance, and volunteers takes a turn for the worst. Then there are the unfortunate differences of opinion and unfortunate miscommunication between nations and their leaders that only end up hurting the poor.

Indeed, as I understand it, the government of Honduras is somewhat paranoid now and apparently, our diplomacy efforts have clashed with some of the leadership there, along with the ALBA push and Hugo Chavez's Venezuelan influence. It appears those fences need mending so that humanitarian support can occur without restrictions to keep the aid flowing.

There are so many things that Americans can do to help in places like Honduras. Things like building schools, sewer treatment plants, infrastructure, health clinics (mobile and fixed), and libraries - that's what's needed and more humanitarian aid would be great. How can you help out, well you could contact the Rotary Club in VA which has built schools in Honduras, or contact UNICEF or USAID? Perhaps, these types of organizations can bypass any temporary international diplomacy challenges.

By the way, I guess things have changed since I wrote that research report back in 2006, quite a bit actually I've noted. Back then I suggested in the conclusion of the report that a "clearing house" is needed for donations into Honduras - I still believe that to be a fair assessment, as it would solve some of the critical logistic challenges humanitarian organizations face. Please consider all this and think on it.
