Community Food Banks Are the Way To Go Not Federal Food Stamps

The other day, I was talking to someone who worked for a major food bank in an upper Midwest state. It was amazing some of the stories they had told, and yet, this seems to be the best way to ensure that no one starves. Consider if you will all the fraud, abuse, and waste in our food stamp program here the United States. It is a little unnerving when you consider the taxpayer burden, and the realization that 44 million people are getting food stamps. Heck, I wish I could get some free food too. Okay so, let's talk about this for second shall we?

About a month or so ago I was at the grocery store in line, actually I got cut off, as someone pushed their cart in front of me, then when they went to pay, they whipped out the food stamps. Then purchase soda pop, potato chips, and all other sorts of fattening foods, and when they were done paying, I told them; "you are welcome." They looked at me kind of funny and asked why, so that I told them;

"First, you are welcome for cutting in front of me in line, and secondly you are welcome since I am a taxpayer, and I am pay for your groceries."

If looks could kill, I wouldn't be here to tell you the story, luckily I stood tall, and just looked them back in the eyes, when they said to me; "whatever."

Okay so, back to the individual I was talking to above. Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia had the concept that a community should get together to teach the children, maintain the library, care for the elderly in a hospital, and at no point did he expect the federal government to do it. The Mormon church has food banks for those people who participate in their religion, go to church, and pay their tithing, they take care of their own, just like any good community should.

Still, I ask you; if what they are doing is working, and all these small community food banks are working around the country, then why an Earth do we need the federal government with all of its bureaucracy, and waste to come in and provide food stamps for 44 million people, most of which are probably getting to be a little obese from overeating, not to mention the fact that they're eating the wrong types of foods, unhealthy stuff.

Indeed, I would like to leave you with that thought, ask that you consider it on purely a philosophical level, and you may e-mail me if you have any comments or questions.
