Tips on Having a Great Home Setup

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 186

The most beautiful properties are residences where the home is the central focus, yet visually connected to all its surroundings. A separate garage, storage shed, children's playhouse, maybe a gazebo or pool house. All separate, but visually unified. Each is interesting, polished and well appointed, but still personal. Tying it all together creates a visual rhythm that draws us in and invites family, old friends, and first timers to celebrate together and savor life.

Achieving this takes some ambition, a fresh approach with a dash of creativity and a few basic guidelines. These five ideas will get you started.

Use the Same Color Palette Sometimes you can be so focused on your home that you fail to see mismatched outdoor structures that are keeping you from achieving visual harmony throughout the property. A well-chosen color palette can unify your property while still allowing lots of individual identity.

Expand Your Use of Shutters Shutters are a wonderful adornment for many, many home styles. They provide visual framing, adding dimension, and beautiful color coordination options. Adding shutters of the same style and color to outbuildings may also be one of the simplest ways to "tie it all together" for visual harmony throughout your property.

Add Architectural Accents This is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to add charm and cohesiveness to your house. An unadorned porch can take on new style with the addition of decorative brackets at the top of porch columns. Repeat the brackets at the right angles formed where walls meet the roof overhang of the garage or cabana. Brackets, along with corbels, post caps, column bases and other architectural details are available in a wide range of styles and are easy to install.

Say it with Flowers Well planned landscaping adds appeal to almost any property. And although trees and shrubs do the heavy lifting, flowers-both perennials and annuals-play a huge role in beautifying and unifying your property. Plantings along a driveway or path can culminate in trellised flowering vines that transform the wall of a garden shed into a colorful bouquet that lasts all summer long. Window boxes are a special touch.

Connect and Enhance Adding an arbor is a great enhancement that ties elements of your property together and provides welcome relief from morning and late afternoon sun. You can plant a vine or climbing rose for a beautiful natural canopy and even more cooling shade.
