Braiding Horse Manes: Three Great Shampoo and Treatment Options for Your Horse

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 222

When it comes to choosing a horse shampoo to use before braiding, there are a few things to consider. You should attempt to find an organic shampoo that is free from oils or chemicals that will cause slickness on the hair. Finding something that is gentle enough for regular use will also ensure that your horse's skin and hair stays as healthy as possible. Be sure to test any new shampoos on a small patch of hair or skin to ensure it is appropriate for use with your horse. Should you have any questions, your veterinarian is often the best source of information as they know your animal personally.

The top pick from many horse owners and enthusiasts is Mane 'n Tail. This product is produced by Straight Arrow Products and has been a staple in the horse grooming community for more than 40 years. Options include the Original Mane 'n Tail Shampoo, Spray 'n White Shampoo, Original Mane 'n Tail Conditioner, Spray Away Horse Wash and Spray Away Concentrate. If you are planning to braid your horse's mane or tail, you should avoid the Mane 'n Tail finishing products to prevent premature falling. This is probably the easiest product to find as it has become widely popular for use on human hair as well as horse hair.

ShowSheen is another popular brand. This line of products is manufactured by W. F. Young Inc. With over 118 years of experience in the equine health and product fields, this company knows how to create an outstanding product. If you are looking for an easy to use product to clean your horse's hair before braiding, ShowSheen Two-in-One Shampoo and Conditioner will soften hair and make it manageable without adding excessive slickness or sheen to the hair. However, finding this product can be a little difficult if you do not have tack store nearby.

Another relatively new addition to the horse care market is eZall. The biggest difference between eZall products and most of the competition is that their products are bio-based. This results in an exceptionally gentle and hypoallergenic cleaning system that is great for horses of nearly any color, age or size. The cleaning agents used in the eZall line of horse washes and shampoos are all plant derived. This provides a soft and smooth feeling to the hair without irritation or health risks. While eZall offers a fantastic finishing product line as well, use of these products is not recommended if you plan to braid your horse.

Braiding horse hair is exceptionally effective and easy when you prepare the hair with a proper shampoo or body wash. These three products provide exceptional results and make braiding horse manes and tails a breeze.
