Braiding Horse Manes: Increase the Health and Happiness of Your Horse With Only Minutes a Day

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 405

While braiding is often considered for horse shows or other events, the benefits of horse braiding extend far beyond the arena or show. This makes it a great skill for any horse handler to know. Best of all, it requires no specialized tools or equipment and can be completed in just a few minutes. The time spent with your animal while braiding will also strengthen the bonds of trust and loyalty, increasing obedience and overall wellness of your horse.

One of the biggest benefits braiding your horse's mane or tail can provide is a reduced chances of skin irritation or infection. Much like human hair, a horse's tail or mane can become tangled over time. This is exceptionally important in windy or sandy climates where the hair is subjected to greater forces from the natural environment.

Regardless of the environment, these tangles become a breeding ground for parasites and bacteria. This can lead to itching, skin irritation, changes in mood and even infections and illness. By keeping the tail and mane of a horse free of tangles, you are helping to also keep these vital areas clear of dirt and debris. Combine this with regular and proper grooming techniques and the results in your horse's health and demeanor may surprise you.

Knowing when it is best to groom and braid your horse is best learned by observation. The environment, breed of horse and living conditions for the horse will all factor in your schedule and timing for various upkeep routines. Too much grooming and braiding can result in damage to the hair, while too little can reduce the benefits of these practices significantly. As a general rule, when a horse's hair loses its shine or previous braids have become loose or messy, it is probably time to consider grooming and braiding again.

When braiding, you should always thoroughly shampoo and detangle the hair you are going to braid. This will ensure that you are not trapping dirt and debris within the braids while also making the experience much easier. Hair treatments and chemical detanglers should be avoiding until after braiding has completed. Many of these products add a silky layer to the hair. This often makes braiding very difficult. These products can also cause the braid to prematurely fall. When it comes to braiding, the best tools for the job are a little time and patience and a good brush made from natural materials.

If you need assistance in braiding horse manes, there are a number of great books and guides available to get you started. Once you have learned how easy braiding horse hair can be, it will quickly become a part of regular grooming and routine with your horses.
