Braiding Horse Hair: Finding the Perfect Preparations for Braiding Your Horse

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 161

A clean and detangled coat is a key aspect of properly braiding your horse's mane and tail. Not only does it make the process quicker and easier, it ensures that bacteria, parasites and other debris are not trapped within the hair. If this occurs, the horse's skin can become irritated and the health of their hair will suffer. Even worse, this can lead to infections and other potentially serious health issues.

However, not all shampoos and treatments are ideal if you plan to braid your horse. Many treatments contain synthetic oils or treatments that will leave a beautiful sheen and appearance. Unfortunately, these same treatments will make the hair too slick for efficient braiding. This can lead to premature falling of the braids and frustration during the braiding process.

When choosing an effective shampoo or treat for your horse, there are a few things to consider. The first thing is what benefits you hope to gain from the shampoo. There are a number of formulas available for a variety of skin conditions, hair types and hair colors. Whitening shampoos are essential for keeping the light-colored horses bright and beaming. Sensitive skin shampoos are great for horses with thin or sensitive skin.

The next thing to consider is where to purchase your shampoo. In many cases, your best option will be a local tack store. This will allow you to get personal advice and see the product firsthand before purchasing. These stores are also often more willing to accept returns should you have an issue with your choice.

One thing to be careful of is combination shampoo and conditioners. These often contain detangling agents and treatments and should be avoided when attempting to braid a horse. Of course, there are fine to use between braiding.

Once you have decided on a treatment to try, the next step is washing and detangling your horse. You should always take care to rinse your horse thoroughly after any soap or shampoos are used to reduce build up and skin irritation. Many horse owners recommended rinsing your horse with a mixture of vinegar and water to deter insects and promote shine without affecting the braiding process.

How often you should wash is often dependent on the horse and environment. If you notice skin irritation or flaking, you are probably washing too often. Washing every two weeks is a good place to start. You can increase or decrease the amount of washings from there to find the perfect schedule for your horse.

The benefits of braiding horse hair are plentiful. While this might seem time consuming or daunting at first, with a little practice you will find that braiding horse manes is quite simple and takes very little time.
