Using Exactas and Other Exotic Horse Racing Bets to Beat the Favorite

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 133

There's no doubt about it, favorites win a lot of horse races. While historically they won about a third of the races, in recent times that percentage has crept up, particularly at smaller race tracks. In harness racing the percentage of winning favorites is well over 40% at some race tracks. That means that if you're betting on horse races, you have to figure out how to beat the favorite or when to bet the chalk, as they're sometimes called.

The public's choice usually doesn't pay enough to show a flat bet profit, but while they do a good job picking the most likely winner, they often fail at determining which horse will run second and complete the exacta. As well as using the chalks in vertical bets like exactas and trifectas, you can also use them in horizontal bets such as pick threes.

But using just the chalk in any situation will result in a flat bet loss unless you can figure out how to get a longer priced horse somewhere in your combinations. That's where profiles and understanding the difference between a winner and place horse makes all the difference. If you're a good handicapper, you probably know the profile or track model for most of the races you be on.

That means you know if front runners have the advantage, how many lengths off the leader the winner usually runs at each call, and other facts about pace and style that lead to many winners. On the other hand, do you know the same information about place and show horses? Each position caters to a particular kind of runner.

While front runners, known as "E" runners in some programs, may not win many races, you may be shocked to learn that they place in many races at certain distances. The typical handicapper first tries to determine the most likely winner, sometimes using running styles and track models, and then uses the same styles and models to determine which horses will complete the exacta.

Many handicappers just find the top contenders and then box them. So if they've already thrown out the early pace hroses, the "E's" then they've thrown out the most likely horses to complete the exacta.Since many people handicap the same way those exactas wind up being a surprise to a large percentage of handicappers and they pay well considering the fact that the favorite is the winner.

Therefore, if the favorite is a legitimate threat to win the race and the most likely choice, don't be afraid to bet in on top in your exotic bets as long as you can find the right horse to put under it that will produce a nice price.
