The Best Way To Bet On A Horse Race

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

While which horse you bet on in any horse race is important, how you bet is also important. Whether you choose to place a straight win wager on the horse or to bet it to place or show or even if you choose exotic bets, success depends upon more than just figuring out which runner is the fastest. While anyone can tell you for sure which one was the fastest as soon as the race is over, knowing which runner will hit the finish line first before the race is run is very difficult to do with any consistency.

Professional horse players call their winning rate, their strike rate. In other words, if a horse player picks ten horses and five of them win, his strike rate is 50%. The public makes a horse the favorite by betting more on it than any other horse and the favorites win about a third of the time, though that may vary quite a bit according to the type of race and venue.

Your personal strike rate and how much you can make from your bets as well as your bankroll will determine the best way to bet. If you have a small bankroll, but want to hit something big, then exotic or "gimmick" bets may be your best shot. You can play a trifecta for fifty cents at some race tracks so boxing three horses costs $3 and may result in a trifecta. There are also pick fours and pick threes that are fifty cent bets. Any one of these may result in a good payoff if you can manage to pick a combination that includes a longshot or two that win.

Betting two or three dollars to win on a longshot will result in a fair payoff, but few horses pay as much as an exotic bet pays when a longshot gets into the mix even when the other horses completing the bet are favorites. Some handicappers would argue that you should always play straight win bets because they are easier to pick than wagers that require you to pick winners in multiple races or horses that will come in first, second, and third, but it's really a trade off.

If you don't have much money to begin with, you really don't have much of a chance unless you swing for the fences, so to speak. You may as well take whatever you have and try to turn it into something meaningful as long as you remember that horse racing and betting is risky and you should never risk more than you can afford to lose.
