Horse Racing Handicapping and Wagering Information Sources

Before you handicap a horse race or bet on a horse race, whether it's the Kentucky Derby, Belmont, or Breeder's Cup Classic or even a lowly maiden or claiming race, you have to get some information about the horses and jockeys. Where you get your information and the reliability of that information will have a lot to do with your success.

Betting on horse races is risky and handicapping horse races is a lot of work, if you do it properly. If you're just looking for a day of fun at the track you probably don't want to spend hours poring over a racing form or studying pace graphs. In that case, simply using statistics and a few simple angles will probably suit your needs.

For instance, if you want to bet but don't know a sprinter from a router, you can always turn your attention to the jockeys and trainers, known as the "connections" of the horse. The connections do make a big difference. Some trainers and riders are much more successful. Do you want to bet on a rider who wins only 5% of the time, just one in twenty races? Probably not, when you can bet on a rider who wins 25% of the time, or one in four races.

Pick a few top riders or trainers and look for their horses on the program. Circle them and bet them in each race and you'll probably have some winners for the day.

On the other hand, if you want to do more in depth handicapping you'll have to be selective of where you buy your program and what information you use to handicap. If you want to be competitive as a handicapper you have to put in the time and learn as much as you can about the sport. Using one factor alone, such as pace, will rarely make you a profit.

Expect to use programs that provide statistics on breeding, the connections, and the horse's running style. You'll also want information about the race and the track itself. That means you'll want to know if front running horses or stalkers win more races. Knowing which post positions have an advantage is also important as are track biases.

As you can see, it gets complicated. That's why horse racing handicapping is known as an intellectual sport and why you'll want to try products from the top suppliers of information. I recommend you try them all and see which ones have the right mixture of information to suit your own handicapping style.
