Horse Racing Betting Made Simple

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

Horse racing handicapping is the art or science of picking winners and evaluating horses in order to determine each horses chance of winning. The reason we evaluate all the runners and not just the obvious few who seem by far the best is because sometimes a long shot does win a horse race. If you determine that a horse has a chance to win a race and if the same race was run ten times it would probably win at least one of those times, then you may say the horse has at least a one in ten chance of winning.

If you look at the odds board and see that the above-mentioned horse is at odds of 20-1 you have just found a betting situation that will double your money, if you play it often enough, that is. Handicappers look for these situations and wager on them to make a profit. Like all human endeavors, sometimes they work out and sometimes they, "...come a cropper," as they say. The lesson to be learned from that is that betting on horse races is risky business, but may possibly be rewarding.

So why don't more people bet on horse races to make easy money? Because betting is easy but winning consistently is hard. The biggest problems that I've identified over the years is that human beings themselves are pretty inconsistent to begin with and emotions have a way of getting between the would-be horse player and good analysis of the facts that lead to sound judgment. Sound judgment is needed to evaluate the horses and then, based on that to pick the right bet.

For instance, let's say that you've lost a few close finishes and you're feeling like your luck has turned on you and then the above bet presents itself. Here is your chance to double your money--maybe. Some bettors would dump their whole bankroll on that bet and shoot for the moon ignoring the fact that even though it offers a chance to double your bankroll it also only has a one out of ten chance of hitting.

On the other hand, having been recently burned, others may pass the bet up or put a ridiculously small amount on it so that even if the horse does win, they will not gain enough to make a difference in their financial fortunes. Obviously, in both cases, emotions caused them to make a financial decision. That is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when wagering on horse races. You have to be logical and reasonable when it comes to how you bet.

Therefore, to make things simple, keep your bets all the same amount, no matter what. A simple method of money management is to simply bet a percentage of your bankroll for the day and only let your bankroll for the day be a percentage of your total bankroll. Therefore, you will almost always have enough for at least one more bet and won't miss any opportunities. Keep it simple and stick with your plan to bet the same amount.
