Early Pace and Late Pace As Horse Racing Handicapping Factors

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Estimating the running styles and trying to handicap a horse race is a difficult task especially when you are trying to determine if the pace will favor a runner or work against it. There are horses who are grinders and who just keeping running along at the same pace regardless of how the other horses run and they seem to be affected the least by the pace. They race in their own little world and their own race. They're few and far between, however and most horses are affected by the early and late pace of a race.

The early speed horse likes to be in front or near the front of the pack. How fast it has to run to be in its favorite position will determine how much energy it expends in the early stages of the race which in turn determines how much energy it will have late in the contest. When you're handicapping pace you have to be aware of several things. First, it helps to know the running style of each horse.

You can use pace figures and speed points to accurately determine how the horse ran in previous races which in turn will tell you how it will try to run in this race. Don't forget that the jockey will also have something to say about that and may be under instructions to somehow try to alter that running style if the trainer thinks it is in the best interest of the horse and will result in a win or a well schooled horse that will be more tractable in its next race.

You also need to be aware of pace matchups that will affect how each runner achieves its position and maintains its pace throughout the race. This may well be the most important factor in pace handicapping. It isn't enough to look at a race model and the running style of a horse. You must also know how the other horses around it will run because the runners don't compete against a stop watch, they compete against each other and where the horses around it position themselves and how fast they run during each part of the race will directly affect your horse.

If this business of matching horses and determining position throughout a race seems daunting, you're absolutely right, but the rewards are equal to the task and spotting a pace scenario that will benefit a runner is one of the best ways to find a good priced winner in a horse race. Therefore, look for the horse who will get to run its race with very little competition for its favored position. It helps that the running style also suits the race model for that distance and surface but don't get too hung up on that because if everything is perfectly suited for the horse, the other bettors will pounce on it and you'll find little value in the pools.
