Drivers and Jockeys in Horse Races Make Winning Horse Racing Bets

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 144

Wondering how to make money betting on horse races without spending hours poring over racing programs? Whether you're betting on harness races or thoroughbred races the person who holds the reins has a lot of influence on how well the horse runs. Horse players have many opinions about winning angles and the handicapping factors that matter and nowhere is that more pronounced than when it comes to the jockeys and drivers.

Some horse players don't think that the driver or rider has much influence in the long run and that any competent pilot will do. Others only bet on certain jockeys or drivers and are fiercely loyal to the people that they think can produce the most winners, regardless of the odds or condition of the horse.

The truth is probably somewhere in between those two extremes. One thing that I've found to be true is that a poor decision during a race can cost a horse and rider the win and sometimes much more than that. Before we get into racing mistakes, however, I'd like to say that I have great respect for the athletic ability and courage of anyone who rides or drives in a horse race.

It's a dangerous sport and requires skill and balance and lots of good old fashioned grit. It's easy to sit back in the grandstand or club house and second guess the moves that a rider makes, but if you're in a pack of thousand pound runners and have to make a split second decision as to whether to try to go up the rail or swing to the outside, it's a whole different story.

You can make money just betting on a good driver or jockey but my advice is to do a little handicapping, or a lot, and make decisions based on the horse and rider, not just the one sitting in the sulky or up in the irons. It is true that some riders show a flat bet profit for a meet, but the better the rider may be the more publicity he or she will get and the harder it will be to get a price on their horses.

I strongly urge you to shy away from riders with a low win average no matter how good the horse looks on paper or in the saddling ring. One thing that I do know is that while a good jockey may be able to get a little more out of a horse, bad jockeys lose races consistently.
