Why do you need to check your home for unsafe levels of carbon monoxide? This is a very important question that every person who owns a home needs to think about. First off, what is it and why should a homeowner have their this levels checked?

What is carbon monoxide?

1.Carbon Monoxide is a gas that is released as a result of combustion and when oil or gas is burned. An example of this is car exhaust fumes that cause pollution.

2.Malfunctioning appliances can cause this is such as a clothes dryer or heater.

3.What makes this invisible gas so dangerous is that it has no smell and no one knows it is there until it is too late.

What does carbon monoxide do to the human body?

1.When a person inhales it enters the bloodstream and blocks cells in the body from getting oxygen.

2.Carbon monoxide attaches itself to the protein in the blood called hemoglobin (which gives blood its red color). Because of this attachment the cells cannot get oxygen, which is something the body needs to live.

3.The symptoms of CM poison are headaches, dizziness, exhaustion, and other symptoms that make it seem like the person has the flu.

Is there any particular age group who are at a higher risk of carbon monoxide poisoning?

1.The very young, such as newborn babies and young children under the age of five years old.

2.Women who are pregnant and the unborn baby are susceptible.

3.People over the age of sixty and senior citizens with chronic health issues.

4.Anyone that has heart or lung conditions.

How can carbon monoxide poisoning be prevented?

It is known as the silent, invisible killer. Every year, millions of people are either made sick, or die from carbon monoxide poisoning. There is no need for people to get sick or die from this when there are simple ways to prevent it.

1.Make sure the home has proper ventilation:Be sure that larger appliances like heaters and dryers do have a good flow of air.

2.Be sure that every appliance is serviced immediately after a problem first arises:Malfunctioning appliances are a huge cause of poisoning.

3.Every winter, get the main heater in the home serviced:Heater repairman normally have detectors. They can check the heater once it is turned on to check the levels of carbon dioxide, if any, that are coming out of the heater whenever it turns on.

4.Get a detector:There are places that sell carbon monoxide detectors that help save countless lives every year. When it is detected, an alarm goes off to alert everyone in the house there is a problem and everyone can evacuate the house.

When a heater is in good working order, there is no need to worry about it. Do what you can to protect you and your loved ones from this invisible killer. All of these reasons are important reasons as to why you need to check your home for unsafe levels of it.
