Mold Spores: Are You Safe From It?

May 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Since molds are naturally occurring in the environment and is in fact ubiquitous in the biosphere, how and when should we consider its presence as dangerous? Well, it is known that mold spores are present in workplace and household dust. While that in itself is not a cause for immediate medical concern, it has also been found out that an abnormally high level of mold spores in the air we breath can catalyze a plethora of medical conditions that warrant serious attention not on the health hazard alone, but on the mold spores itself. That is to say, it is not the resulting diseases alone that should be controlled, but the proliferation itself of the mold spores.

A wide range of medical conditions is tied to a high level of exposure to airborne mold spores. It is worth noting that particular groups of individuals, most notably infants, young children, the elderly, and those with a weak immune system are more prone to suffering from diseases associated with exposure to molds. But members of the general population can also be affected with conditions such as headache, dizziness, skin rashes, memory problems, IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome), coughing and sneezing, chronic fatigue, inability to eat, immune system suppression, nose and throat irritation, as well as burning, watery, and reddened eyes. Mood swings, as well as the inability to think, focus, and concentrate are also some of the effects that can be had from inhaling airborne mold.

While outside air do not generally cause a dangerous level of exposure to mold spores, both the air in the workplace and your home can be a breeding ground for a high level of mold spore concentration. There are a lot of factors that causes this abnormal situation. A relatively high air humidity is one among them. Another natural occurrence that is known to catalyze the rapid proliferation of mold spore is heavy flooding in an area. It has been found out that homes and buildings that suffered the ravages of flooding also has an increased mold growth in its vicinity. Under normal conditions, however, an increased level of mold growth has also been observed. Airtight homes and buildings, for example, support mold growth due to an increased level of humidity. The use of cheap construction materials in buildings, such as drywalls, also promotes rapid mold growth. The reason for this is that these kind of materials have poor drying potentials resulting to moisture problems. This in effect renders the building conducive to rapid mold growth.

This plethora of mold-growth inducing situations calls for homeowners and building managers alike to implement a strategy for controlling mold growth. It may take basic procedures such as ensuring the proper functioning of heating and air-conditioning systems. In other instances, assistance from individuals trained in handling mold growth problems will be required. Whatever method is used, it should be put in mind that taking and acting on the necessary precautions regarding this problem will mean security and peace of mind that comes from knowing that the air we breath is free from disease causing contaminants such as mold spores.
