How to Secure Your Castle

June 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 186

What is the worst case scenario for your physical survival? Would it possibly be the loss of your home? Could it be an inability to secure your home from theft and destruction? If you were forced to live without any shelter, you might not survive.

"Your home is your castle," is an adage that applies even more today. Only in emergencies such as fire, flooding, or political chaos would you evacuate your home. Chances are that you would return to rebuild and start again in the same place.

Sheltering in your castle involves securing your home. In the old medieval castles, there were moats, turrets, wall torches, drawbridges, along with sentinels that guarded the castle. Such was the privileged life of the feudal lords and kings of long ago. Hundred of wars were fought and countless lives lost to gain possession of castles and serfs.

Regardless of your housing structure, there are basic considerations to be taken for securing your private castle. Consider the main door to your home. This is your drawbridge to your castle. Would your deadbolt withstand a firm kick on the door? Look at the door hinges and type of door in place. Examine the deadbolt. Can you kick the door in? One popular option is to place screen doors in front of wood doors as an extra barrier into the entrance.

Secondly, the main entrance to the home should be well lit. To use the feudal castle analogy, this is comparable to the torches perched on castle walls for illumination. A dark house at night invites theft and trouble. Motion detectors can turn on at dusk and intensify as motion is detected. Consider placing solar lights around the driveway and in front of the house. Even a porch light can serve as a deterrent.

Thirdly, consider the windows to your domain. In the castle example, windows are similar to castle turrets. Can they be easily broken or scaled? Storm windows are usually recommended in areas of tornadoes and hurricanes. They can withstand debris flying at them at very high speeds. Aluminum shutters or wood shutters can also protect your windows.

Another barrier for windows is to place thorny plants like cactus or roses under them. Roses and small cactus can be kept in pots if you live in apartments or small dwellings. Barking dogs and loud parrots can also serve as your sentinels into your castle or home. Loud sounds from domestic animals do distract potential thieves.

Medieval castles had moats or were perched high on the hills. If you don't have a high wall or fence, think of building terraces with rock and boulders. Also, trees scattered around the perimeter of the house help secure your home.

Wherever you live, see your dwelling as your castle. Make it the best refuge in good times and disasters. You are king in your home Secure your castle for yourself and loved ones.
