Compression Stockings - The Benefits of Wearing Compression Stockings

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 349

Compression stockings and support hosiery are predominantly used for healthcare purposes but the availability of modern materials combined with more adventurous design has meant that the wearing of such articles of clothing doesn't necessarily require a less glamorous look.

Compression stockings are primarily used to aid the circulation of blood from the lower legs, where age, weakening musculature or illness has reduced the body's capacity to do this entirely unaided. Blood flow is predominantly achieved by the action of the heart pumping blood around the cardiovascular system and the action of veins returns blood back to the heart. The veins contain valves which ensure the blood only flows in one direction. If the veins in the leg become damaged or missing as is the case with varicose veins, then the blood remains within the veins. A similar condition arises when the vein is blocked as in Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Compression hosiery assists the blood flow up the legs by applying a constant but graduated pressure to the veins and muscles in the legs. Due to the effect of gravity forcing the blood in the legs downwards, compression stockings are designed to apply the most pressure at the ankles and at a gradually reducing level of pressure the further up the leg the stocking is in place.

The calf muscle plays an important part of the process in that it's contractions squeeze the deep veins in the legs against the soft tissue held within thereby pushing blood up the leg. The compression stockings assist in this process, assisting the muscle in its contractions but subsequently returning to its original shape.

The Benefits of Compression Stockings

-Improves circulation -Relieve symptoms of tired and aching legs -Helps prevent deterioration of varicose veins -Helps prevent recurrence following surgery -Conceals unsightly veins -May prevent unpleasant and costly surgery

How To Use Compression Stockings

For Compression Stockings to be effective, you need to wear your stockings constantly during the day. Usually you should take them off before you go to sleep, but your doctor may advise you to wear the stockings at night. Take them off every day to wash your legs and check the condition of your skin.

When checking your skin you need to look out for:

* Sore marks at the top of your legs * Blisters or discolouration, especially on your heels or ankle bones

If you spot any of these signs, or if you're worried, don't put your stockings back on and talk to your Doctor.

Take care to prevent your skin becoming dry by applying an emulsifying cream to your legs. Your Doctor can recommend creams that are appropriate for you.

It is claimed that more than 50% of the western population should wear compression hosiery either for an underlying medical condition or simply to prevent tired aching legs. 1000′s of individuals need support for conditions such as DVT, varicose veins, lymphoedema or simply to help tired aching legs.

Compression Support Hosiery is available as Graduated Compression Support Stockings, Tights, Socks, Maternity Tights, Accessories and some Anti Cellulite Hosiery.

What's more, many styles are available so that compression stockings can be glamorous too!
