During the winter months we often feel lethargic and have less energy. The lack of sunshine and the short days often lead to feelings of depression and sadness. Not only do our bodies tend to store more fats and toxins during these months, but we often also pack away our emotions leaving us feeling imbalanced. The storage of these toxins can lead to a lower immune system making us susceptible to sickness. As the weather changes and the dark winter days turn into days filled with sunshine and warmth, our bodies are ready to release these toxins and start fresh and new.

According to Ayurveda, Spring is one of the most important transitions in the year. It is the time when the sun's energy returns and life begins anew. Along with the wonderful rebirth Spring brings forth, it also brings allergy season. A lowered immune system and the build-up of toxins combined with this change in season can make you susceptible to springtime illnesses such as colds, congestion and a runny nose. A simple springtime cleanse can leave you feeling renewed, as well as heighten your mood and help you combat illness. The best choice for an Ayurvedic springtime cleanse is the Panchakarma cleansing method.

Panchakarma is a healing, cleansing method that detoxifies the body, strengthens the immune system and restores balance and well-being leaving you feeling healthy, happy and rejuvenated. To begin this method you first must prepare your body for the cleanse. You can start preparing up to three weeks before you start the actual cleanse.

To begin preparation for the cleanse, you first want to cut processed foods out of your diet. This includes sugar, caffeine or other stimulants, and most dairy products. As you draw nearer to the actual cleanse you will want to further modify your diet and focus on eating mostly vegetables and whole grain food. The purpose of this is to create a more alkaline environment which aides in the cleansing process.

You will also want to shift the focus of your exercise regime to more internal activities. During this time you will want to practice aware breathing and concentrate on exhalation. Focusing on exhalation will help rid your body of negative thoughts and emotions. Now you are ready to begin your cleanse.

The recommended method of cleansing for Panchakarma is a fast. You will want to start each day of your fast by taking two tablespoons of ghee with a glass of hot water on an empty stomach. Throughout the day you will want to drink plenty of water along with a special fasting drink. There are many different recipes you can choose from. You need to find the one that best suits your taste. Along with this fasting drink you will want to drink herbal teas. Some recommended teas are yogi detoxifying tea, any gentle laxative teas and/or colon cleansing teas. You will also want to include a daily dose of fiber on each day of your fast.

Once your fast is winding down you will move into the rejuvenation phase. During this phase you will want to slowly introduce solid foods back into your diet. A good way to do this is to work backwards from the way you prepared for the cleanse. A good meal to start with would be a simple whole grain rice dish with vegetables. You will also want to keep drinking your fasting drink for at least five days into the rejuvenation period.

Panchakarma is the perfect cleanse to kickstart your health for the spring. It will leave you feeling fresh, healthy and right minded.
