April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

Mother's Day is one of the most celebrated events of the year. What's astonishing is that it is being celebrated worldwide. Mothers, raise your flags and be proud as you have a special day. And to the expectant mothers, you're next in line - congratulations in advance! We have been passing this tradition generation to generation, but do you know how this special day came to existence? You've got to know its origin and who were the first people to celebrate this event. Like Christmas, this would be somewhat meaningless if we don't know the origin and purpose of it. Care to share this with your mom as well.

The roots of this holiday can be traced in UK wherein they celebrated a special Sunday called 'Mothering Sunday'. However, the beginning of the Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. This festival is celebrated annually across the globe in honoring the great women of our lives.

Earliest Accounts It started from the Greeks during the ancient annual spring festival as a form of dedication to maternal goddesses. The ancient Greeks used to do this practice in honor of Rhea, wife of Cronus, and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans, on the other hand, used to celebrate Hilaria, a spring festival for Cybele, a mother goddess. When it comes to Christianity, early Christians celebrated Mother's Day during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of Virgin Mary. This celebration was spread throughout in England, and it was then called Mothering Sunday, as mentioned above.

The Mothering Sunday As mentioned above, Mothering Sunday was pioneered by the English people in 1600s. Mothering Sunday was celebrated yearly on the fourth Sunday of Lent to give tribute and honor to mothers. During Mothering Sunday, children brought flowers, special pastries and fruit cake, and other gifts to pay accolade to their mothers, and this was done after a prayer service in the church. Nevertheless, this practice ceased in the 19th century.

Mother's Day According to the Noble Women of America

Julia Ward Howe In 1872, this American writer, poet, and activist, Julia Ward Howe implied that the official celebration must be taken place in the US. According to her, the occasion was dedicated for peace, should be annually commemorated on June 2. She also initiated Mother's Day Peace rites on the second Sunday of June in Boston. This practice was religiously followed by the society, until it was moved to the month of May.

Anna Jarvis Anna Jarvis was the Founder of Mother's Day in US, in spite of being unmarried and childless. Her mother, Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis was her source of inspiration behind the foundation of this occasion in US. According to her mother, everyone must honor all mothers, whether living or dead and give them a special homage. In 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state in the US, until May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution declaring second Sunday of May as Mother's Day.
