The Value of Air Conditioners

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 161

As the heat of summer sets in, life can get interesting for those without air conditioners to cool down their home and work spaces. Drinking iced tea or jumping in a pool are excellent solutions to the problem of a lack of air conditioners, but not a permanent or easily sought solution for everyday life. The only thing that can truly cool the temperatures in a house or workplace is an air conditioner. These appliances provide cooling to a specific room are areas of the house. Once considered a luxury, air conditioners are now a necessity, especially for areas of the country that have long, hot summers.

Centrally air conditioned homes are the easiest, although most expensive, solution to the need for air conditioners on hot summer days. This provides constant cool air temperatures to the entire house, not just a specific room, and can keep spaces more easily and consistently cooled. This should be installed in homes with high temperatures for extended periods of time; however, the installation costs can be prohibitive.

Single Air Conditioners

These are also available for single rooms. These are best for areas where central air conditioning is not needed as temperatures do not get hot enough for long periods of time to warrant the cost of central air. This typically can effectively cool a 8x10 room in less than one hour. However, the cost of keeping this operational for long periods can be very high.

How It Works

While these appliances provide enormous relief to millions during the endless heat waves of summer, how they work can remain a mystery. It uses chemicals that can turn from a gas to a liquid, and back to a gas. The main components of an air conditioner are a compressor, condenser, evaporator and expansion valve. It also has a thermostat to control the temperature. Stored outside are the compressor and condenser.

In order for it to work, the chemical inside of it goes into the compressor in gas form. It is compressed until it is hot and then moves through the condenser, becomes cool and turns into a liquid. As the liquid is forced into the expansion valve it begins to evaporate. As it evaporates it blows over the metal fan and the cold air cools the room.

Cost

This come in many shapes, sizes and efficiencies. The cost ranges quite a bit for these appliances, depending on how much space needs to be cooled and the budget of the buyer. A popular brand, Frigidaire, sells their single air conditioners for between $199 and $399, and this rate varies for size and force of the unit. The cost of installing central air is between $3000 and $9000, depending on the size of the home.
