How to Prepare for the Dog Days of Summer

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

It's coming. We are barely in to April and already we are having 80 degree days. What does that mean for you? It's time to prepare for the dog days of summer. That means some basic air conditioner maintenance and a checkup.

Your air conditioner has sat idle outdoors since last summer. This means that it is likely filled with leaves and debris. If you don't clean it your air conditioner bill will likely be higher than it has to and you run an increased risk of a costly breakdown.

Keep in mind. Repairing your air conditioner is NOT a do-it-yourself job. For safety's sake alone you really should call an HVAC expert. There are a few things that you should do to help keep your system in peak condition.

Clean or replace filters

This is something simple yet vital that you can do. Your filters help to purify your air by collecting dust. If you don't clean them, they will become clogged and reduce air flow to your system. You will also re-circulate dust which can be bad for your allergies and overall health.

Your filter is usually located inside or very near the return-air (air- inlet) side of the furnace or air- handler cabinet. You simply need to remove the filter and replace. You should plan on changing out your filters twice a year.

Clean the air-conditioner condenser.

This is something else that is vital to the functioning of your air conditioner. Let me tell you right off the bat the very best thing that you can do is to call and expert for a maintenance call. They will be able to get your system much cleaner as well as check for other problems.

You can however remove any leaves or debris on or around your system. You can also spray water on your system to help blast dirt and debris out of the coils. Be careful not to bend any of the fins on your system and don't spray water on electrical components or the fan motor. My suggestion would be to NOT remove the cover on your air conditioner at all as this will decrease the likelihood of damage to your unit or yourself.

Cut and remove any weeds or vines that may obstruct airflow through the condenser unit

While you are at it, you should remove any weeds or vines that may be growing on or in the immediate vicinity of your air conditioner.

Making sure that the area is clean around your system, changing your filters, and getting a professional checkup on your system three very easy, and very simple things that you can do to your system. They may be simple but they are absolutely vital to the proper functioning of your system. Not only will you increase the life of your system, but you can will increase your air quality and will save money not only be increasing the life of your system but also on your monthly bill as your system will be able to more easily achieve the desired temperature in your home.
