How Do I Choose a Thermostat?

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 214

Where do I start?

When looking at replacing the thermostat for your home it is easy to get overwhelmed at the incredibly large list of options. Today I am going to explain some of the largest categories and help you narrow down which thermostat may be right for you. As with all of my articles I am going to start with the best advice possible. Ask an expert. Seriously, the time it takes to pick up the phone and ask a few basic questions is MUCH less than the time you will spend trying to figure out what to buy and where to buy it. Not to mention the hours you will spend messing with the electrical wires behind the thermostat, and the time spent looking at the manual (you do look at the manual right???)

With that being said let's begin.

What is a thermostat?

Thermostats are the center of your home heating/cooling system. They determine how much heating or cooling is produced in your home. They are basically complicated switches that turn your furnace/air conditioner on and off. There are three basic categories to choose from:

Mechanical Non-Programmable

The most basic type of thermostat. Basically it's a box with a dial. The only time the temperature changes is when you get up to change it. Think of it as the old rabbit ear tv with no remote.

Digital Non-Programmable

The next step up. These thermostats use electric controls instead of a metal coil that the mechanical thermostats use. This makes them much more accurate temperature gauges. They also feature large easy to read electronic displays and buttons to change the temperature settings. Nope, it's still not programmable and very few features beyond what's mentioned.

Digital Programmable

Everything else falls into this category. These thermostats feature all of the items mentioned in the Digital Non-Programmable but as you can see from the title they are now programmable. This means you gain the ability to set what temperature your house should be at all times during the day and night. Whether your home or not.

Once you get into programmable thermostats things can get complicated fast. For starters there are five basic types of automatic and programmable thermostats:

Electromechanical

Digital

Hybrid

Occupancy

Light Sensing

They typically range in price from $30 to $200 depending on the type and features you want.

So What Do You Suggest?

My strong suggestion would be to get a programmable thermostat. They will definitely save you money in the long run and make your house more comfortable. For example, in the winter you can have the house warm up an hour before you have to get up to get ready. You can also have it cool down while you are away. This can save you a lot of money on your electric and gas bills year round. Beyond that I would highly recommend giving an HVAC expert a call. Having an expert to assist you in determining the thermostat that is right for you ensure proper installation is well worth the small amount of money that the new system costs. In headache time alone it is worth it.
