Three Heartburn Foods To Avoid

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

Life can be really difficult if you struggle with chronic heartburn. Eating can become nothing short of a nightmare, there is constant discomfort in the chest as stomach acid goes up to the throat and leaves a bad taste in the mouth, and not to mention the possibility of not sleeping properly because that pain is keeping you up most of the night. If you finally do go to sleep you wake up feeling irritable and tired throughout the day. It makes us hesitant to eat anything.

Not all foods have the same effect on a heartburn sufferer. There are some foods that are considered the most common heartburn triggers, because they cause the valve between the stomach and esophagus to not close properly. Anything we've eaten, as long as that valve is slightly open, will enter the esophagus and cause the pain we know as heartburn.

The foods that are most likely to cause heartburn are acidic foods, fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, nicotine, garlic, onion, spicy foods and alcohol.

Here are three heartburn foods to avoid:

This popular dish consists of tomato, oil, spices, cheese, onion, pepperoni and a number of other ingredients. This mixture of different types of food can start heartburn in even the healthiest of individuals. For people suffering from heartburn, eating pizza is a recipe for disaster. Because pizza is a combination of many different types of foods, it's impossible to determine what exactly triggers your heartburn. If you just have to have pizza they way you like then the only solution is to limit how many slices you eat and hope for the best.

Fried Chicken

A fast food delicacy that people can't get enough of. It usually part of a meal that includes french fries and something to drink. But there's a heavy toll to pay if it causes your heartburn. Soaked in oil and spices, fried chicken is one of the worst heartburn triggers, just like any other deep fried food. Some possible answers that will allow you to continue to eat fried chicken are: limiting how many pieces you eat, cutting back on the spices you used if you make it at home, changing cooking oil, or even breading it and cooking it in the oven. Plan out how much fried chicken you think you can eat and don't over do it.

Chile Relleno

A popular mexican dish that tastes good but can create problems for heartburn sufferers. It's made with cheese, meats, peppers and spices and then breaded with masa flour and deep fried. For a lot of people, eating this is a one-way trip to heartburn. This always seems to be the case with cuisine that are fried or have a bunch of different spices in them. The solution: find a restaurant, or a friend, who can make a milder version of your favorite dishes, and who will bake them instead of deep-frying them. You can also try eating very small portion and see if that goes down without a heartburn flare-up.

There are many other heartburn foods to avoid to be sure and it can be down-right hard to resist how good they taste. If you have to eat them, be careful. Eat them in smaller quantities and wait at least 3 hours before going to bed and don't drink anything with caffeine while eating these foods either.
