Six Methods to Get Over the Bother of Heartburn

April 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 171

The people who experience heartburn on a regular basis find it annoying and painful, and often because it occurs when eating can be very uncomfortable in a social setting. Heartburn may come on when you're eating out and knowing what causes your heartburn will make the dining experience more enjoyable. Knowing what to do with that burning feeling in your chest or throat will be a great relief. It is something almost everyone has experience, but when it happens on a regular basis it is called gastro esophageal reflux disease.

Although the causes of heartburn can vary from one person to the next, commonly it is caused by fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint and caffeine. Carbonated soda drinkers also have a higher risk of developing heartburn, as does drinking too much alcohol. The trigger to heartburn is when the valve that is between the stomach and esophagus, or tube leading from the mouth to the stomach, gets relaxed. Depending on what food sets the condition off in a particular individual, the stomach pushes food and gastric juices back into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

Some of steps we can take to alleviate heartburn will be the following:

1. Increase the fiber in your diet. Eating Fiber rich foods may help bind the food in the stomach and prevent it from escaping back into the esophagus. Research has found that those who consumed the most fiber in tests had a 20% lower risk of experiencing serious heartburn.

2. Over eating. Gorging yourself or eating just before bedtime can trigger heartburn. Also, eat smaller meals more often.

3. Eat slower. A study at the Medical University of South Carolina had the same people eating fast, and then eating the same meal at a leisurely pace. Heartburn occurred much less frequently when the participants ate slower. One reason may be that when a person chews his food more slowly, more saliva is produced, which has a neutralizing effect on stomach acid.

4. Lose weight. That high fiber diet will have another effect: high fiber diets tend to make you feel fuller on fewer calories. Overweight people tend to put extra pressure on their stomach due to their greater weight. This greater weight force will cause food to back up into the esophagus.

5. Stay out of the prone position after eating. Taking a walk or at least sitting upright will cause the food to stay in the stomach simply through force of gravity. About the worst thing you can do after a big meal is stretch out on the couch.

6. Watch your medications. Aspirin is a common cause of heartburn. If you must take medication that induces heartburn, take them with food that will coat your stomach to lessen the result of heartburn.

There are over-the-counter products and antacids to treat the condition if it persists. Also, be aware that if heartburn is accompanied by severe pain, sweating or pain in the left arm, these are symptoms of a heart attack, so seek medical attention immediately. But for the most part it is just annoying and uncomfortable, but can be combated with a few easy steps.

Fiber Rich Foods are an excellent remedy for heartburn and should be part of everyone's diet. Another interesting and helpful article that we recommend is one on Poor Blood Circulation. Rich Carroll is a writer and health enthusiast living in London.
