Natural Ways to Tackle Acid Reflux

March 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

In many instances, when your body is crying out in pain there is a natural reason why it is doing this and there is a natural cure. Learn to listen to your body and educate yourself as to why it is acting the way it is - this is the first step towards finding a solution that prevents the problem rather than just masking it.

When it comes to acid reflux, in most cases, especially with mild cases it comes down to lifestyle choices and your diet. Here we will look at someways you can change your lifestyle and help combat your acid reflux without having to resort to prescription drugs.

Acid reflux is caused when by failure of the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach (the LES or 'lower esophageal sphincter' valve). The stomach has the same acidity as battery acid (nice), but it is built to handle its acid. However, the esophagus, which takes food down to your stomach, cannot tolerate the acid so it enters at an acute angle that kinks off the stomach fluid.

Acid reflux occurs when the LES valve is unable to do its job. This may happen for a variety of reasons, but generally the key lies in what and how much we eat.

Lifestyle Changes to Help Combat Acid Reflux

  • Take care of your body position - use gravity - after eating, don't lie down, but stay in an upright position for a couple of hours until your meal has been digested. This will help keep acid reflux away from your esophagus.
  • If you suffer from acid reflux it is also a good idea to prop your head up when you sleep so that your upper body slopes upwards.
  • Watch the alcohol, cigarettes and coffee - these are three drugs known to increase the amount of acid in your stomach and also nicotine can relax your LES valve, causing a double blow.
  • Give your stomach a rest and also provide a general boost to your body by reducing the amount of these things.
  • Stop stuffing yourself - A full stomach can pull the stomach down and put extra pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which will increase the chance that some of this food will reflux into the esophagus. Big meals will also increase the acidity within the stomach.
  • Wear looser clothes - don't squeeze your stomach up or put it in unnatural positions. Anything tight on the abdomen puts pressure on the stomach, pushing acid up toward the esophagus leading to a greater chance of acid reflux.
  • Lose a bit of weight - extra fat puts more pressure on the apron of fat that covers the stomach, which in turn pushes acid up toward the esophagus. Losing a bit of the excess can help put your tummy in prime position.
  • Educate yourself on food - write down what foods cause you discomfort and learn about foods to see what diet changes could help you.
  • Acidic foods, like citrus fruit, and foods high in fat are known to exasperate acid reflux.
  • Oatmeal or bran can fill you up and absorb excess acid. Ginger, aloe vera, salad, bananas, melons, chicken & turkey, fish & seafood, roots & greens, celery, parsley and couscous or rice are all foods that will help your stomach function and help control the pH of your stomach.
