Learn About Good Heartburn Foods And Ways To Prevent Heartburn

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

If you're one of the 60 million men and women living in the United States dealing with heartburn, you pretty much have an idea what causes your problem. It could be one specific type of food or a wide variety of them. Fried chicken, milk, peppermint, burritos are just a few examples of what usually triggers heartburn. Doesn't seem like there's anything good left to eat. What can you eat if you want to be heartburn free?

Our bad nutritional habits and eating choices are why we have trouble with our stomachs. What happens is that the foods we eat don't stay in our stomach, but is backing up, together with stomach acid, into the esophagus. This happens because the muscle between the stomach and esophagus gets loose or damaged by various irritants, such as acidic foods.

There is a ray of light though. It turns out that there are in fact good heartburn foods that can help with some of the symptoms of heartburn and they taste good too. Listed below are a few of then as well as some guidelines of how to prevent heartburn:

1. Eat five of six smaller meals instead two or three large ones. A full stomach can push the valve to esophagus opened, causing acid to back up.

2. Don't eat meats that are riddled with fat, buy lean cuts instead. Grilled them instead frying them to reduce the amount of fat you eat.

3. Dishes with tomatoes are almost universal heartburn triggers. It can be hard to fathom but it is possible to get a pizza without tomato sauce. They also have greasy cheese, another trigger.

4. Drink apple juice instead of orange juice.

5. Fresh, natural vegetables usually don't cause heartburn. It's only when they are fried that there is a chance. Don't put hot spices on vegetables, season them with herbs instead.

6. Bananas and apples are the safest fruits to eat Try out other fruit slowly so you can determine what you can and can't eat.

7. Strong, black coffee is definitely a heartburn trigger so it's best to dilute with fat-free milk. Try to limit yourself to two cups a day.

8. Say it isn't so...chocolate does trigger heartburn. But if chocolate relaxes you, then eat only a little bit at a time.

9. For those who get heartburn from liquor, the best course of action is to not drink. But if you like to drink socially, sip your choice of alcohol and dilute them with ice and/or water.

Of course everybody's different and what may bother one person may not do anything to another so it's best to make a list of what you eat and see how your body reacts to them. You begin with a bland-tasting diet then slowly add more foods to it until you get an idea of good heartburn foods.

Wait at least three hours before going to sleep. For night owls you get hungry, an apple or a glass of water will help. If you're trying to go back to sleep, stay away from the chocolate cake. It's probably in your best interest to avoid the refrigerator.
