3 Foods That May Flare Up Your Acid Reflux

April 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 160

Many foods you eat will increase your suffering with acid reflux so should be avoided at all times. These foods will cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and allow the acid and undigested food to force itself up into the oesophagus. This is what causes that horrible burning feeling that all those suffering from acid reflux (GERD) experience.

The three main types of food that you should avoid to prevent acid reflux are:

1. Acidic Foods - You must avoid the consumption of all acidic foods such as tomatoes, citric fruits and vegetables, onions, grapefruit and garlic. Instead of these acidic foods stick to foods like bananas, apples, potatoes and green beans.

2. Fatty Foods - Fatty foods like meats, butter, margarine, many sauces, salad dressings and deep fried foods will also contribute to your acid reflux. Make sure you trim the fat from your meats and choose sauces and salad dressings that are free from fat. Many of these fat free foods taste better than their fatty counterparts and are much better for you not just in reducing your acid reflux but also in lowering your cholesterol and fat build up in your arteries. An increased benefit in eating healthy.

3. Beverages - All beverages containing caffeine, like coffee, tea and hot chocolate will cause acid reflux. Switch to the decaffeinated drinks. Also, avoid sodas and alcoholic beverages.

If you avoid these three types of food, your overall health will improve greatly. We have all been made aware of the conditions that come about as a result of eating unhealthy foods.

Some of the more serious effects of acid reflux can result in you having to have an operation to help close your lower esophageal sphincter muscle and may even result in esophageal cancer. This burning feeling you get from your GERD is an early warning sign that you have to take some serious steps to prevent this condition from worsening.

You must also avoid eating any foods at least three hours before going to bed. This will give the food in your stomach time to digest and it will not have to produce more acid to help digest your food while you are laying down. This will often result in the acid and undigested food forcing itself up into your oesophagus.

Remember your stomach requires these digestive acids to work on your food. It is not the acid itself, but the weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter brought on by the eating of wrong foods that is the culprit. So, watch your diet and avoid these three categories of foods. This will do a lot to decrease your suffering from acid reflux.
