How to Eat Heart Healthy Foods

1. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, or even frozen fruits and veggies. Try to include fruits and (or) vegetables in every meal or even when snacking. Fruits and vegetables contain a lot fiber that is great for helping the body maintain a healthy level of cholesterol. There is great abundance of fruits and vegetables in many different colors and shapes to help make your selection better. Dark colored fruits and vegetables contain very powerful pigments that will help to protect your heart by increasing natural antioxidants.

2. East more whole grains. Whole grains helps with supplying you with fiber and have minerals and vitamins that is very good in helping to regulate your blood pressure. Try cooking and eating brown rice instead of white rice. Try whole grain bread instead of the white bread. Eat high fiber breakfast cereal in place of a sugary breakfast cereal. Oatmeal is high in omega-3 and is also a good for breakfast, offering heart protective phytonutrients.

3. Eat low saturated fat meats. Choose cuts of meat that have little amounts of visible fat and before cooking cut out as much visible fat as possible from the meat. Try to seriously cut back on or avoid all together fatty meats, such as bacon, sausage, and processed meats. Limit how much saturated and trans fats before cooking. Try eating more foods which are cooked by baking, broiling, roasting, or even stir frying. Also, choose lean meats such as veal, lamb, chicken, fish, turkey, and even wild game meat. Just make better choices, for instance, skip the fried chicken and choose grilled instead, or even try ground turkey or a veggie burger instead of the regular hamburger. Fish that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids are: Salmon, Herring and Mackerel.

4. Choose low-fat vinegarette for your salads instead of the rich creamy dressings.

5. More and more restaurants are removing trans fats from their foods, but still ask how foods are cooked before ordering when eating out.

6. Always talk with your health care professional, so they can provide you with individualised advice. Sometimes some fruit such as grapefruit and pomegranates may interact with some cholesterol medications.
