What if you have a pre-existing condition? The truth is that many Americans suffer from a number of health-related problems. While some insurance companies debate about what they will and will not cover, there are several other alternatives out there. No one should be penalized for conditions that are sometimes out of their control. Since most insurance companies do not examine their clients prior to signing up for the policy, there can be a fine line in deciding who gets coverage and who does not. In the end, there is a degree of protection for both the provider and the person needing coverage.

Knowing those rules and regulations are important; however, knowing what you can do to prevent some conditions are just as important. Some of the conditions that an insurer might consider can range from heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, type 2 diabetes, asthma, HIV/AIDS or any other health problem that affects a large portion of the population. With that knowledge, it is important to have an alternate plan of action if you have one of these conditions. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law to prevent pre-existing condition requirements imposed by health care providers. This law has given those who need help with medical coverage the relief they need without prejudice. Since laws are often repealed and overturned, it is important that you educate yourself on how you can continue to stay healthy. Here are some of the top pre-existing conditions that many suffer from and some ways to catch early signs of a problem.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death; however, that does not mean you have to accept that. There are some things you can do to prevent it. Smoking or using various tobacco products can increase your risk of developing a heart condition. The chemicals used to make those products can damage your blood vessels and heart. Whether you know it or not, your arteries are being narrowed over time from consistent tobacco use. Tobacco companies are required by law to place these warnings on the packaging.

Exercising can also be used as a preventative method to decrease your risk. Regular daily exercise is something that you were encouraged to do as a child. Physical activity with other lifestyle choices, such as eating more balanced meals and maintaining a healthy weight, gives you the power to prevent major health conditions from forming, and the payoff makes you feel so much better.

Another condition is high blood pressure. Some of the things that you can do is to reduce your salt intake. There are some who put salt on every food they eat. Studies show when you cut your salt intake, your blood pressure will fall and stabilize. Drinking alcohol in moderation is another method to control your pressure from rising. Drinking too much can not only increase your blood pressure but create other issues, such as liver disease, over time. You should limit the amount alcohol you consume to two drinks a day. For women, you might want to consider one drink per day. Stress can also make your blood pressure rise. Find things that you enjoy to reduce the stress in your life.

In conclusion, there are laws in place to protect the everyday person, but there are things that we can do to protect ourselves from falling victim to a pre-existing condition.
